Death Race 2050 review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2017 05:46 (A review of Death Race 2050)

Notes:
*I have seen a lot of bashing on the trailer and such due to people not understanding that this is meant to look the way it does.
*It's a remake of the original and wanted to keep the campy idea of said original.
*They weren't going for serious so people just shouldn't think of it that way.
*The cast has a pretty interesting selection with Malcolm McDowell and Manu Bennett.
*I haven't heard of anything from the writer or director.
*I can only hope it's as fun as the trailer looked.

Pros:
*I love that it captures the cheesy and campy quality of the original.
*It's a modern day 70s style exploitation that in my opinion is excellent fun.
*The gore, carnage, and mayhem was awesome.
*It stays pretty true to the original unlike the Statham/Goss versions.
*Manu Bennett is awesome as usual!
*The ending was fun.

Cons:
*There are some ideas and bits that were pretty dumb even given that this is a leave your brain at the door sort of movie.
*Malcolm McDowell's hair piece lol.
*I thought some of the characters were pretty annoying.

Verdict:
It's over the top and completely campy! That's how it is meant to be and I enjoyed it for that. It's a nice homage to original. Don't go in taking it too seriously. Watch Death Race 2000 and you will understand why this is the way it is. If you don't or didn't like it if you've seen that before then pass on this. Though it was a fun watch I don't think it's worth more than one look though to be honest.

The Girl with All the Gifts review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 4 January 2017 08:42 (A review of The Girl with All the Gifts)

Notes:
*Oh I have been waiting for this ever since that trailer!
*The cast is a great selection.
*The story looks intense and almost like 28 Days Later so it shall sate my thirst hopefully until they get their heads out of their asses and make the third part.
*I haven't seen or heard of any films from Colm McCarthy, but he has worked on several TV shows I am familiar with.
*As for Mike Carey who wrote the book I haven't heard of any of his work.

Pros:
*It's definitely one heck of a thrill ride.
*The story is familiar, but it has it's own greatness to it.
*The cast is brilliant and the characters get you invested.
*At times it's brutal in a useful way.
*There were some great moments and ideas throughout.
*I liked that it was unpredictable most of the time.

Cons:
*The poor poor animals.

Verdict:
There is a strong sense of The Last of Us and 28 Weeks Later with it's own tweaks. It's an excellent infected movie. The characters are great and the acting makes them even better. The story is intense and a thrill from beginning to end. I would say it stands out quite differently than other movies in the genre. It's definitely worth the watch.

The Escape review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 1 January 2017 08:22 (A review of The Escape)

Notes:
*Clive Owen returns to the BMW shorts he did 14 years ago!
*An excellent selection of supporting actors here.
*This one is directed and written by Neill Blomkamp so it should be quite interesting.
*David Carter has been the writer for quite a few of these shorts.
*Hopefully this will be as badass as the other ones!

Pros:
*Once again they nail what made the others so fun.
*The acting was excellent.
*The story was intriguing.
*There were some good bits of action.

Cons:
*I want more of the whole story.

Verdict:
The Driver proves that he still has it. The acting, characters, and story were great. It's a fun watch that kind of begs to be expanded in my opinion. Will this be the start of another shorts collection or will this be all. Whatever the case this was great.

Sing Street review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 31 December 2016 06:52 (A review of Sing Street)

Notes:
*This was playing at my theater when it first came out, but I never had the chance to just sit down and watch it all.
*There are some moments I saw of the end that I absolutely loved and really made me want to watch the whole thing.
*It has some well known actors who are really good.
*This is the first film I have seen from writer/director John Carney, but not the first I have heard of.
*I hope the rest of this is as good as the ending.
*Thank goodness for Netflix sometimes.

Pros:
*The music is great with "The Riddle of the Model" and "Brown Shoes" being my favorites.
*Of course Adam Levine's song "Go Now" is also great from the soundtrack.
*I loved the characters and thought the acting was excellent.
*There were many moments I thought were quite fun and entertaining.
*I still love the ending even after countless times walking in to clean a theater.

Cons:
*Aidan Gillen didn't do too much here.

Verdict:
It's a wonderful watch from beginning to end. It has good music. The characters were great and the actors projected that even further. It's continuously rewatchable. If you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend you do so.

The Birth of a Nation review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 29 December 2016 07:42 (A review of The Birth of a Nation)

Notes:
*This movie didn't go as noticed as it should be because of Nate Parker's allegations.
*Besides that I hear that those who have watched this thought it was quite brilliant.
*I myself am curious about the movie itself whether it is good or not.
*It has a pretty damn good cast too.
*This isn't the first film Nate Parker has written with two other films.
*He did one called Eden that is pretty under the radar, but I thought was pretty good.
*As for the other one I have not seen or heard of it before.
*This is the only film credit for writer Jean McGianni Celestin.
*Is this really good or should people continue to stay away.

Pros:
*The acting is excellent.
*Nate Parker has a unique directing style that in my opinion sets this apart.
*The story is very well done.
*It's a brutal and disturbing one, but it's also an important one to be told.

Cons:
*It is a bit hard to get through due to the content it deals with.
*There were moments that really hurt emotionally when I think that these things happened.

Some Thoughts:
*I thought it was smart that although there were some pretty gruesome moments they were brief and only emphasized how awful those times were.
*It's terribly scary to know these things actually happened and with things the way they are going now.

Verdict:
It's mostly a slow burner, but it's effective for the entirety of the story. The content is disturbing and I feel it should be. This stuff isn't meant to be taken lightly. This was a period of history that really shouldn't have existed. Nothing about slavery or racism is right. I think this is important to watch. It won't be easy mind you, but it's worth it.

Trolls review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 28 December 2016 07:06 (A review of Trolls)

Notes:
*I honestly wasn't too impressed with the trailer.
*It just feels like a complete Smurfs copy.
*Not even sure why they decided to make this.
*The main reason I decided to check it out is because my huge crushes Zooey Deschanel and Anna Kendrick are in it.
*It does have an exceptionally awesome cast.
*Mike Mitchell hasn't made a lot of good movies with his best being Sky High which I loved.
*Walt Dohrn also directed a few of the Shrek films which were still good.
*Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger wrote for the Kung Fu Panda trilogy as well as two of the terrible Alvin and the Chipmunks films.
*Erica Rivinoja has yet to fail me with her work on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Extreme Movie (guilty pleasure).
*Hopefully the music doesn't suck here.

Pros:
*My favorite song is "Hair Up".
*The characters are pretty interesting.
*For me you can't go wrong with Anna Kendrick or Zooey Deschanel.
*It had some pretty amusing ideas.

Cons:
*The story is pretty generic.
*I didn't really like the designs of the creatures.
*I was hoping for more original songs than ones I already know.

Verdict:
It's a decent watch. I was hoping it would be better considering the talent. It's a pretty generic kids movie that does have moments. It just overall should have been more entertaining than it was.

Blair Witch review

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 22 December 2016 11:23 (A review of Blair Witch)

Notes:
*I thought the first two were just okay. Not bad, but not great.
*This one however looked to be really good and interesting.
*Besides I tend to get a kick out of Adam Wingard.
*Simon Barrett also joins him in writing practically all his movies.
*Let's see if this is any good.

Pros:
*It's actually a true sequel to part one!
*It goes back to the roots being a found footage.
*I think this actually managed to be scary at times...I usually don't get scared so that's a big plus.
*I liked that it explained the lore a bit better.
*There were some pretty cool ideas that expanded the lore.
*Favorite scenes were when Ashley broke the sticks and whenever we see Lane pop up again.
*I thought the ending was great.

Cons:
*It was a bit cliche at times.
*There were times where things got annoying.

Verdict:
It lacks something to make it great, but it is actually more enjoyable than the first two. Sure it has it's own problems, but I felt the story was more pulled together. I would say it's worth at least a one time watch.

Siren review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 19 December 2016 08:28 (A review of Siren)

Notes:
*Hannah Fierman is the only person to return from the VHS short Amateur Night.
*There are also several other actors from the VHS Viral entry.
*Ah Gregg Bishop directed a segment of VHS Viral and Dance of the Dead so now it makes sense.
*I haven't heard about any of the films from the writers.
*Hopefully there will be more of an explanation since this is feature length.

Pros:
*I think it makes a bit more sense what she is although I still feel a shroud of mystery.
*I love that Hannah Fierman returns for the role.
*I thought the characters were pretty interesting.
*It keeps what made the short fun and adds even more to it.
*There are some pretty intense moments.

Cons:
*I think the acting was a little lacking.
*The rape scene was a bit disturbing.

Verdict:
This was a great spin-off from the VHS short. It reminded me of Splice in a sense whenever she went all monster. If you liked the short I'm sure you will enjoy this too. It's wildly entertaining from beginning to end.

The Amityville Terror review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 16 December 2016 09:39 (A review of The Amityville Terror)

Notes:
*This is the second of the Amityville attached names I have seen today.
*I'm surprised that this one has a few people I recognize.
*The production value looks much better than the other one.
*Hopefully that won't be the only thing that is better.
*This is the first film from director Michael Angelo.
*This is also the first writing credit for actress Amanda Barton.
*Let's see how they do.

Pros:
*The soundtrack is decent
*The kills were actually fairly good except the ones involving fake looking fire.
*Some of characters were pretty interesting.
*It actually kind of feels like it belongs in the series.
*There were some pretty great moments.
*Some of the actors were decent.

Cons:
*Some of the actors are pretty bad.
*The CGI shouldn't have been used due to it just looking bad.
*I felt the ending was a bit loose.

Verdict:
It's definitely one of the better name only related sequels in this series. I found myself actually enjoying it. That could be because I was expecting very little. It could also be because this actually had a fairly decent budget. Anyways this is the reason I keep going. It's not great, but I would say it can be watchable depending on your mood.

The Amityville Legacy review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 15 December 2016 08:32 (A review of The Amityville Legacy)

Notes:
*Oh exciting 2 more terrible name only additions to the saga starting with this one.
*I only watch these so you don't half to.
*I mean could these possibly get worse or can they stay consistently bad.
*I just constantly hope that they surprise me somehow.
*The writer/director duo haven't done much.
*Anyways it's time to see how much of a pain this is.

Pros:
*It's a very short production made even shorter with long credits.

Cons:
*I find it hilariously stupid that to remind us that these are part of the Amityville series they constantly use the DeFeo murders as the opening scene.
*It's already a super short "film" with the first 4 minutes being what we have seen countless times and then a boring title sequence.
*It feels like a student film with the production value, bad acting, boring characters, and lame writing.
*There are some WTF moments that really irked me.
*The ending was just lame.

Verdict:
This was pretty damn awful. It made little to no sense. It's poorly executed on all counts. The end was just stupid. I think there was one scene that made me chuckle and a few ideas that could have been something in a better movie. Even the deaths were either off-screen or very dry. I think the most interesting was one character getting shot in the neck very briefly. Anyways just skip it. I mean it's a joke of a movie. It has to be.
