Spectral review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 15 December 2016 04:34 (A review of Spectral)

Notes:
*This sounds like my kind of film.
*I mean it's sort of similar to an idea I have too although still quite different.
*There is a pretty cool selection of actors here which is good.
*This is the first film for director Nic Mathieu.
*This is the first film as well for writer Ian Fried.
*John Gatins has written several popular films as well as some upcoming anticipated ones.
*Jamie Moss wrote Street Kings and the upcoming Ghost in the Shell.
*George Nolfi has done a few films with Matt Damon and they have been decent.
*With all these writers and the cast I expect this to be entertaining.
*Let's see if this is as good as I hope for.

Pros:
*The cast is great as well as the characters themselves.
*The story is great from beginning to end.
*It's actually a refreshing new take on this sort of topic.
*This was nothing like I was expecting and that's better than I imagined.
*There are some really great moments and ideas.

Cons:
*Some characters make a few dumb decisions, but that's really it.

Verdict:
This is quite a badass movie. Apparently it's been in development for 5 or so years. So with that in mind I'm perfectly satisfied with the finished product. If you haven't seen it check it out ASAP. Netflix really got a good one here.

Mercy review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 13 December 2016 07:12 (A review of Mercy)

Notes:
*I am bored on Netflix again so giving this a look.
*The trailer looked interesting enough.
*I have seen ATM and Buried both written by Chris Sparling. They had been entertaining enough.
*I haven't seen his directorial work until this one though.
*I don't really recognize the actors here so we shall see how they hold up.
*It kind of looks like a You're Next and The Strangers sort of scenario.
*Come on Netflix don't fail me now.

Pros:
*It is definitely an interesting concept.
*It's totally not what I was expecting it to be.
*There were a few nice twists.

Cons:
*The plot complicates itself a little bit.
*I really didn't care for the characters.
*There isn't much in terms of character development.

Verdict:
I really don't get the hate with this one. I thought it worked fine. They really make you wonder about the whole thing. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. For me it was a decent one time watch.

The Thinning review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 13 December 2016 01:45 (A review of The Thinning)

Notes:
*Yes I am indeed watching another film with Vine Stars and Youtubers.
*This also has a couple tv/movie stars as well.
*Of course one of the main reason I decided to watch this one now is once again Lia Marie Johnson lol.
*It's a Youtube Red original and the first that I decided to go ahead and start for.
*I can't turn down a good sounding dystopian future story.
*It's also brought to us by the guys who did the Shane Dawson (and other youtubers) horror movie Smiley.
*Let's see what this one has to offer.

Pros:
*Logan Paul can actually hold his own and doesn't come off as the dork from his vines.
*It actually has a really good production value
*Here is proof that vine stars and youtubers can act in some cases.
*The concept is actually pretty interesting especially when you see the video the kids watch.
*There were actually some pretty good twists.

Cons:
*A few things don't really make sense here and there.
*I was hoping for something a bit more.

Verdict:
For a Youtube film I think it actually managed to be a decent watch. It has faults and some bits that don't make too much sense. It definitely feels inspired by YA novels. If you are into that then give it a shot.

Expelled review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 12 December 2016 06:38 (A review of Expelled)

Notes:
*I felt bored so I checked this out on Netflix.
*The main reason is because Lia Marie Johnson is in it.
*It doesn't look great, but hopefully it won't be awful.
*This is the first and only thing I have heard of from director/writer Alex Goyette.
*So let us see if this is worth the 80 or so minutes of my life or if I should have expelled it from my watch list.

Pros:
*I liked the Ferris Bueller's Day Off elements.
*There are some pretty good laugh out loud moments and jokes.
*The characters are fairly interesting.

Cons:
*The acting could be a bit better.
*Some of it comes off as a bit too silly.
*At times it is very much for kids, but other times it gets slightly more mature.
*It felt longer than it actually was.

Verdict:
I don't think it is the worst thing I've see which is good. In fact it was actually entertaining. For youtubers a vine stars this is about as good as one would expect. I'm sure the younger crowd would like this. As for adults I say it's a pass.

The Wailing review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 11 December 2016 09:44 (A review of The Wailing)

Notes:
*I really know nothing about this movie.
*It's 2 and a half hours so I am hoping it will be good.
*It was suggested by a friend here so I'm giving it a go.
*I have heard of Hong-jin Na's other movies, but haven't seen them.
*There are a couple actors here I have actually seen before.
*Anyways let us see what this has to offer.

Pros:
*The acting was excellent!
*It's familiar yet feels like such an original story.
*Despite the long runtime it doesn't feel long a lot of the time.
*The ending was interesting and I definitely wasn't expecting how it would all go.
*I have to say I don't think I have seen a Korean movie deal with this subject matter.
*It's pretty humorous too mixed in with the drama.

Cons:
*It's quite long and it's not necessarily quick paced.
*You kind of have to understand their folklore to get some things that happen.

Verdict:
Thanks to the giraffe for suggesting this. It's actually a pretty good movie. It deals with a subject we've seen with a new perspective. If you got a few hours to kill I say give it a shot.

Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies (2016) review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 10 December 2016 03:36 (A review of Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies (2016))

Notes:
*I generally like zombie movies and this looks like fun.
*It's also foreign which I usually find to be much better than American stuff.
*This is the first film I've heard of from the writer and director.
*I have actually seen Laurie Calvert and Gabriela Marcinkova in other things.
*This isn't Gabriela Marcinkova's first run in with zombies after her short in ABCs of Death 2.5.
*I hope this is as fun as the trailer made it look.

Pros:
*There are some creative kills.
*The characters are likable and the acting is decent.
*There was actually some character development.
*It's actually pretty funny.
*It has elements that remind you of Shaun of the Dead, Dead Alive, and Dead Snow.

Cons:
*The pacing feels a bit out of wack.
*It is a bit too short.
*I felt side characters got killed too quick sometimes.

Verdict:
I typically enjoy zombie movies. There were some great zombie kills. This was funny at times, but it ended up falling short of what I had hoped for.

Almost Christmas review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 8 December 2016 06:11 (A review of Almost Christmas)

Notes:
*I'm really not expecting too much from this one.
*It does have a decent cast though which is good.
*David E. Talbert also wrote and directed First Sunday and Baggage Claim which were both pretty funny.
*Anyways I decided to go ahead and check it out seeing as it is almost Christmas.

Pros:
*Attention grabbing and fun opening.
*The cast is great and the characters are interesting enough.
*It had some good laugh out loud moments.
*The ending was sweet.

Cons:
*Way too many characters with way too many subplots.
*There are things that feel a bit out of place with plots and characters as well.
*Some things are never even explained.
*It's not really all that different than other movies that deal with this subject matter.

Verdict:
It's not very original, but it does keep your attention. It's a little scrambled in the story, but it has some great moments within each subplot. It can be quite funny at times and dramatic as well. The actors are the main thing to hold this together. It may not be for everyone, but I still somewhat found it enjoyable.

Gridlocked review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 3 December 2016 04:22 (A review of Gridlocked)

Notes:
*Out of the line up of movies on my Netflix to watch list I just decided on this one.
*I'm really not sure what I felt like watching, but the premise sounded interesting enough.
*It's filled with a lot of direct to DVD stars, a couple of good ones, and then some interesting ones as well.
*Director/Writer also did a film that I'm pretty sure is from the UFC films since it has a ton of UFC fighters in it. (Would definitely check that out for just the action.)
*This the only other work from the other writer.
*I don't expect too much of a plot here, but I do hope for some good action.

Body Count: 40

Pros:
*The acting wasn't actually all that bad.
*Trish Stratus is still kind of hot in a way.
*There are a few pretty cool brutal ways to kill here.
*It actually had twists I didn't see coming.
*There are fresh ideas that you don't typically see in movies like this.

Con:
*For a movie with a tagline involving "...and enjoy the body count" I was hoping for a bit higher body count.
*A tad bit too long.
*A few silly moments here and there.
*Getting a little tired of seeing Vinnie Jones in all these direct to DVD stuff.
*The ending was kind of cheap.

Verdict:
It's a tad on the long side, but it has enough action and interaction to keep it interesting. I don't think it's too worth wasting nearly two hours of life. If you are bored though it keeps your attention.

Stake Land II review

Posted : 7 years, 4 months ago on 30 November 2016 08:42 (A review of Stake Land II)

Notes:
*Finally the sequel to Stake Land is out!
*Shame that it's a Syfy channel movie though.
*At least they got the original actors to return!
*The actor of Mister even writes here which is pretty cool seeing that he wrote the first one too.
*The directors are new to the scene though so we shall see what they have to offer.

Pros:
*I love that they kept the look and feel of the original.
*The opening was surprisingly really well done.
*Syfy actually managed to not screw this up.
*It's a pretty solid sequel.
*The new characters are awesome while it's nice to see how characters have grown.
*There were a few creative and original moments that I liked.
*It leaves at the possibility of a third one, but to where it's also okay if there isn't.

Cons:
*It was a tad bit shorter than I would have liked.
*The fact that it was on TV toned it down a bit (So I hope there is a DVD release that is uncensored.)
*There were a few silly moments that kind of annoyed me.

Verdict:
For a Syfy channel movie this actually managed to pass as a sequel. Unlike most of their sequel movies this wasn't dragged down. I think it helped with the fact that Nick Damici returned as the writer. If you liked the first one you will like this too. It has it's downgrades, but it is a solid watch if you ask me.

Don't Breathe review

Posted : 7 years, 5 months ago on 28 November 2016 04:37 (A review of Don't Breathe)

Notes:
*The concept seems quite interesting and attention grabbing.
*The main cast is recognizable and decent.
*Fede Alvarez (along with writer Rodo Sayagues) also did the remake of Evil Dead which I actually enjoyed quite a bit.
*Having seen Lights Out and The Good Neighbor I can't help but be reminded of them a tad.
*Anyways I am sure this will be excellent either way.

Pros:
*It's intense from beginning to end.
*The whole thing is unpredictable with a crazy twist to top it off.
*The acting was great.
*All the characters were interesting.
*It was actually pretty creepy and I was caught off guard quite a bit.

Cons:
*All the stuff with turkey baster was just yuck lol!

Verdict:
It's an intense and creative home invasion story with it's own unique twists. The characters and acting keep you interested. There really doesn't seem to be much of a dull moment. It's definitely worth the watch though for sure.
