Beauty Shop review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 24 July 2016 09:11 (A review of Beauty Shop)

The spin-offs count too. That's really the only reason I'm watching this one right now. Plus it does have a pretty decent cast. Bille Woodruff is an average director. He hasn't made anything that really stands out in my opinion. He hasn't made anything just plain awful though so that's good. Elizabeth Hunter also wrote Jumping the Broom which I enjoyed. I have only seen The Mod Squad by Kate Lanier, but it was just an average kind of film. Norman Vance Jr. also wrote Pride (the Terrence Howard one) which was pretty good. I feel like this may end up being a decent enough watch. Oh man you can tell this is dated when Michael Vick gets mentioned with positivity. This radio lady kind of reminds me of the woman from The Warriors movie. I wonder why they decided to switch their area. Maybe they didn't want anyone to focus on why Ice Cube's crew never makes appearances. Oh nice they get their homage and such. Kevin Bacon's character is just too much ahaha. Wow that's so not fair. It's got character though that's for sure. Oh yeah the token white girl of the group. That is the kind of customer I just would not enjoy in any scenario. There is always a way. They had to add their own little hustler to the store lol. At least they are consistent with their gimmicks. Haha he just had to go too far. Damn if only he showed up a little later or the other showed up sooner. Now we got the token opposite gender member haha. Oh wow lol! I don't know, but that looks like a mess. Yes a thousand dollars was mentioned before. A hiccup in the writing I guess. As I watch this I realize I have definitely seen bits of it before. Nice one man Oh what a burn! I knew what was going to happen. I wouldn't mind her doing that to me lol. Well that escalated quickly. That is just plain evil. I wonder how they did all that so quick. I had a feeling. Okay that I didn't see coming. The ending was kind of silly. This was pretty predictable. It's definitely not as good as the Barbershop films. It was decent though and had a few good moments.

Barbershop 2: Back in Business review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 24 July 2016 04:34 (A review of Barbershop 2: Back in Business)

So I enjoyed the first one well enough that I decided to go ahead and continue on with the series fairly quickly. Don D. Scott is the only returnee for behind the scenes as the writer for this installment of the series. Kevin Rodney Sullivan takes over as the director. I have only seen Guess Who by him which was a fairly enjoyable movie. Many of the actors returned here which is always nice to see. I find it interesting that they started it like that. It's a sad reality that is a constant struggle to this day. Oh I like how they used the credit sequence to progress through the years. Yeah you better be scared. All I am saying is apple juice lol. He's over here making getting a haircut like going to a circus lol. Ricky is one of my favorite characters for sure. Aww man now the villain is on the more legal side of the spectrum in this than the first one. Man he serious about her! That's some love at first sight type of stuff for sure. I like that sort of musicality going on with the barbershop sounds. Okay that was pretty funny. Rules are made to be broken lol. Yeah I kind of felt that was coming. He deserved that for sure. Wow that was actually pretty awesome and powerful! Oh man that's just not fair. That was a pretty decent ending. I loved getting to know our characters more as well as many of the new ones. In my opinion this was about equal to the first one in enjoyability. There were a few stand out moments throughout. There were also some nice jokes spread around. It's definitely worth the watch in my opinion.

The Wave review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 24 July 2016 01:52 (A review of The Wave)

I just recently saw the trailer for this. I have to admit I have a guilty pleasure for disaster flicks. This one though looks absolutely incredible and gut-wrenching. I tend to find foreign films grasp horror/thrills so much better than the US a lot of the time. Anyways I was looking around on Netflix and as soon as I spotted it I was excited. I really hope this is as great as it looks. I actually have seen the two leads in another film which is cool. Roar Uthaug wrote the first two Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) films as well as directed the first one. I feel confident that I will like this based on his skills so far. This family is really adorable. I really hope they will all be okay by the end. I'm not ready even though I know it's going to happen. So uh what about his kids? Well this situation kind of reminds me of Jaws. Well that explains that. That was Cold Prey! Now it's about to hit the fan! Nobody believes it at first of course. Wait I'm already halfway through? This is so engaging I didn't even realize nothing had happened for half the movie. Holy crap! The tension is driving me insane! I don't know why, but when that woman decided to help I started tearing up. I mean it shows the bits of humanity that are still good out there. I just wish all of mankind could be like that. Oh lord! This movie is wheels off. I like how we see the before, during, and after of the whole thing. No, no don't do this to me! I kind of wish they didn't cop out there! Some nice facts there at the end. What's really interesting is that this is based on a place where this could really happen. One thing is that it does remind me of The Impossible and San Andrea. It's so much better than the latter though. I really enjoyed the way they told this story. Sure it isn't a very original idea. It's presented very well though. I thought the characters were great and the acting was amazing. It's really well done. They even tried to get this into the Academy Awards. I can see why. I definitely recommend checking this one out.

Barbershop review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 23 July 2016 10:14 (A review of Barbershop)

Well I typically like these kinds of movies that Ice Cube is in. The newest one came out this year and I actually met him in person. Anyways I figured I should go ahead and get to watching this series. I have seen nearly all of Tim Story's films. The only ones I liked were the Ice Cube ones coincidentally. All the others were just okay or trash. I hope this one is somewhat enjoyable. I mean it has two sequels and a spin off. Other than Don D. Scott who directed the most recent House Party sequel (which I actually loved) I am not familiar with the writers. It starts off interesting enough to catch your attention. There are a few different conflicts going on here. I wonder how they will all get resolved. That is one long crazy order which I would never remember myself haha. I know he is like a wannabe and all, but the way they are treating him just isn't right. I like the silly gags they have spread out here. I also like the different personalities that are throughout this. Oh man they are going to be pissed when they find out haha. Yeah I had a feeling that was coming. I find it funny how they are playing off Cedric the Entertainer as really old when he was in his early forties in this. Yes that dude deserved that! Damn put him in his place man. I love the serious moments because it really shows the skills of these actors. That was a smart decision for everyone. I liked the ending. It was a pretty cute movie. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but it was great and funny. I mean I could see myself watching it again.

Mother's Day review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 21 July 2016 06:16 (A review of Mother's Day)

I typically get a sort of kick out of these ensemble cast and holiday basedkind of films. So I figured I would go ahead and give this one a shot. Plus Jennifer Aniston! I have seen many Garry Marshall films. I liked New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. So I'm sure this may be enjoyable for me too. This is the first movie I have seen written from all the writers involved here. Haha that mom is a dork. I can't believe Jennifer Aniston is old enough to be a grandmother these days. She has only gotten hotter. If I were Brad Pitt I wouldn't have made the choice he made in my opinion. I don't think I have ever seen a mother comfortable with only a towel on around her kids' friends. Oh that's just awkward. Hey look they added a look at what is like to be a single father on Mother's Day. I hate infomercials! Julia Roberts' character is probably going to be one of my least favorites. Haha nuns on treadmills. Who eats chicken like that? Fatigues even make Jennifer Garner more attractive. It's kind of crazy how stand up comedians can take a serious thing from their life and make it into comedy that people laugh at. There is a lot of cheesiness going on in this. I had a feeling that was going to happen. Of course that would be who the mother is. Yeah I was wondering how they would get them together. That was kind of funny. I like how they all ended up in their stories. The stories are all fairly interesting. Yet I do feel that some of them are basically what happened in New Year's Eve or Valentine's Day. Nice to see Kate Hudson is still around. Also I never understand how Jennifer Aniston could ever be overlooked. Anyways that's besides the point. It's not a great film, but it was a decent enough one time watch.

Monsterland review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 20 July 2016 06:57 (A review of Monsterland)

So I'm seeing mixed feelings about this one. That's understandable given that it's an anthology though. I figured I would give it a shot since I typically enjoy some of the stories and the variety. Most of the directors/writers here are first timers. Only a few have things I have heard of but haven't seen. Dick Grunert did a segment in Fun Size Horror: Volume 1 that was decent. John Skipp is the most well known here. He wrote Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Child and worked on a segment of Tales of Halloween. Anyways I hope this one shows which segments are which so it's easy to separate them. Let's see how Monsterland fares in the anthology world. Well it looks like I will have to wait until the end to find out who did which segment again.

"Monsterland Wraparound" Directed by Andrew Kasch and John Skipp

Well I can already tell this is going to be a goofy movie. That can go either way. I think this first thing is the wrap around segment. It looks like something pretty crazy has been going down here. The fact that he laughed so hard at the is kind of concerning. The fact that he was annoyed like that is common was pretty funny. He is about as turned off as I was about that last one. Now we come to the end of the wraparound as well. Oh that's actually a nice way to round it all up.
6.5/10

"Freshwater" (This is not the actual title and it doesn't look like it's credited to anyone. I can only assume maybe this was also by Andrew Kasch and John Skipp. Otherwise the credits don't seem to acknowledge this as a segment of it's own.)

Well that beginning was a welcome one haha. There is always a prankster smh. It might be a good idea to get out of the water right about now! Well that was a pretty quick one. A bit silly, but it was more or less fun.
6/10

"The Grey Matter" Directed by the McCoubrey Brothers and Written by Peter McCoubrey

Wait what the heck just happened? Okay that looks really painful and most likely not survivable. I'm curious as to what's going on. I think whatever it is has to be in his head. The characters are at least interesting. Well that was disturbing. It also kind of reminds me of Bad Milo and Alice in Wonderland. That red dress is on fire wow. Dude needs to learn to chill. Also that's an interesting predicament. I felt it ended at an odd point though.
6/10

"Curiosity Kills" Directed/Written by Sander Maran and Co-Written by Kaspar Ainelo and Jan Andresson

Yeah they are making those beans look quite gross. Okay I think I'm going to hate this one already. It's just awkward. I guess it's in a slight way amusing. I just don't really like this kind of style. Her slapping him was a bit dumb. That was kind of funny and messed up. Please let them get eaten haha. That's what I'm talking about. Well then that ending was something else.
2/10

"Hag" Written and Directed by Erik Gardner

Dude how are you not creeped out by that? Way to go and make something innocent and sweet come off as creepy. Okay I feel like that psychiatrist is actually the kid from Children of the Corn Isaac. He definitely is. Sure the atmosphere is fairly creepy, but I'm honestly really bored. I'm not sure why. Well that must have been pretty painful. A little fourth wall breaking there at the end. This segment was really boring. All it had going for it was two horror legends playing roles.
3/10

"Monster Man" Created by F. Sudol

They didn't notice that thing or were they "running"? This is amusing. Looks can be deceiving. Haha that was badass. That ending though!
6.5/10

"House Call" Directed by Graham Denman and Written by Dick Grunert

I love how it somewhat explains his character without words. That would be hard not to laugh at if I was in his position. Oh my gosh! That is just so cringe-worthy. That's insane! I loved that ending. That final shot was great! This is definitely a great segment!
9/10

"Happy Memories" Written and Directed by Jack Fields

Nooooo! I don't like this one. I hate ugly puppet looking things. I never eat Quizno's because of that weird puppet commercial they had once. So I'm already greatly turned off by this segment. Did someone slip something into my food I feel like I'm on LSD with this segment. Or that would be the only way I would enjoy this at least. I'm mortified and not in a fun way. Actually I'm pretty sure being on LSD would make it worse. Good lord this is hella stupid! I'm pretty sure I know why this segment happened. I just wish it didn't happen. It was not enjoyable whatsoever.
0/10

"Stay at Home Dad" Directed by John Skipp & Andrew Kasch and Written by Cody Goodfellow

Whoa I did not see that coming! It's very different but creative. I would be very cautious of such kind of experiments. Yeah those are definitely unnatural. Lol omg that is so awkward! Oh nooo! I was wondering when the actuall horror would come to play. That is pretty horrifying. Okay that ending was something else. It's a weird one for sure, but it was strangely enjoyable.
7.5/10

"Hellyfish" Directed by Patrick Longstreth and Robert McLean (Guess Written by as well)

We start off with a little reading for this one. That's a strange coupling of terrorists. The opening is a little cheesy. This one had some opening credits and they were pretty cool. Do people really even do that with jellyfish? That was amusing. Why are the hot ones always such brats? Why did he even try that in the first place? That game looks like fun. That kid has an interesting hair style. Haha on a public beach wow. Okay it's getting pretty fun and wicked. Now this short is what B movies should be all about. No I want more! Don't end it like that. This is my favorite segment of them all. It's cheesy, fun, and gory.
9.5/10

It was just okay. Then it spiraled downhill. Then near the end it got better. I would have to say I wish this was much shorter. A few of the segments were pretty good and I felt like those should have been put in a better anthology. The awful ones are pretty dreadful. I wouldn't torture anyone by suggesting it. If you do happen to check it out just watch House Call and the last two. Otherwise avoid this.

The Invitation review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 19 July 2016 09:45 (A review of The Invitation)

There isn't really much on Netflix that has caught my eye at this point of the night (Midnight). I just decided to go ahead and go with this one. It has a decent cast and seems like it may be interesting. Oh well that's not a good sign. This is directed by Karyn Kusama. She has yet to make a movie I like. Aeon Flux and Jennifer's Body were just awful. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi also wrote Aeon Flux. They also did the Ride Along films, Clash of the Titans, and R.I.P.D. all of which I enjoyed. Well that's definitely a way to open a story. This has definitely got to be an awkward situation. I don't trust this at all. She seems a bit off. It's certainly an interesting group of friends we have here. So is that kid actually there or just a memory. That was a bit of a disturbing to do to friends. I guess that explains that. I'm ready for things to explode in violent fashion. Well that took a dark turn. I understand why he feels the way he does. I would in this situation as well. Yeah these are some pretty dysfunctional people. Over halfway through and nothing I would say is horror has happened. Oh finally there is something that gives some concerns. This is mostly a drama with a dash of thriller. I'm still waiting for the "horror" element and it's less than a half hour left. Finally it gets real! Oh wow this is insane! Jeez that made it even more brutal. Okay that ending was actually brilliant and unexpected. You know the huge amount of waiting we do here is well worth it in the end. I mean who would have though such a massively slow build could have such an epic outcome? The acting was really well done even from the fairly unknown. I enjoyed the characters. I congratulate Karyn Kusama for finally making something actually enjoyable. I definitely recommend this for those with patience. It sure is a virtue with this one.

Rebirth review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 19 July 2016 03:24 (A review of Rebirth)

So along with "Stranger Things" Netflix has uploaded this. I never knew anything about it until I saw it there. I love the cast and the premise looks quite intriguing. The only other film I have seen from Karl Mueller was The Divide. He only wrote that one, but it was still really good. Now let's see what this is all about. This kind of reminds me of Yes Man already except a lot more serious. Well something strange is definitely going on. Yeah it's definitely creepy. Something weird is happening to them. It feels like they are the hive mind or zombies and not the outside world. This place is really strange and yet it's kind of cool so far. This is really crazy and highly entertaining. I love the mysterious atmosphere. She would be driving me crazy with all those reflected questions. Air cannot be her real name. Okay that's really disturbing. I'm sitting here wondering just what the hell is really going on. I think I would probably love that room too. At least I would at first. Then again this may end up going a direction I wouldn't like. Well never mind I definitely would have liked it. Also I would have tried my best to just ignore that haha. It gets even crazier as it goes along. I wonder if the whole thing is going to be like a Total Recall type of situation. Please get back in the tub haha! I'm not sure what to think here. Some things are making sense though. Okay never mind I lost it again. I am so confused. I guess this is one of those films where you just kind of have to make your own assumptions. It keeps you watching though. The writing is great. The acting is excellent. The mystery is constant throughout. I recommend to check this one out and see what you can figure out.

Southbound review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 19 July 2016 12:14 (A review of Southbound)

I been meaning to check this out for awhile. I love anthology films. Roxanne Benjamin who directs and writes here was also connected with the VHS trilogy. David Bruckner directed and wrote a segment in the first VHS film. He also directed Signal which was a pretty good under the radar film. Patrick Horvath has written and directed some awful films like The Pact II and Die-ner (Get it?). Radio Silence also wrote and directed a segment in the first VHS film. They only direct here. In fact it seems like just about everyone here has been involved with VHS in some way. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin wrote, directed, and starred in a segment of VHS. Dallas Richard Hallam worked on The Pact II besides this. Susan Burke wrote Smashed which I thought was pretty good. Anyways I'm not sure who did what segment here. I will figure it out maybe at the end or in some way they will tell the audience like some anthologies do. I will try to segment out my reviews.

"The Way Out" Directed by Radio Silence and written by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin

Oh we start off in the mix here. Something is going down, but we are not sure of what it is. That kind of reminds me of a few films. Still always interesting to see why it's happening. Damn that was pretty brutal. I like the design of these creatures! Well that's an interesting turn of events. Not sure what happened in the end, but it was interesting enough.
7/10

"The Siren" Written/Directed by Roxanne Benjamin and co-written by Susan Burke

They start this one off near to where the first segment leaves off. Yeah I just feel like that's going to be a very bad idea for them. That food is not as creepy looking as the people there. I think maybe I get what's going on here. Okay maybe I don't. This is definitely not what I thought was going on. Man that was messed up, but I also kind of figured it would happen. I would have liked a little bit of explanation for this one. It wasn't bad though. It just doesn't really have much going on with it.
5.8/10

"The Accident" Written and Directed by David Bruckner

That's a different way to start a segment here. Good lord! This is definitely a unique set up for a segment. I'm curious to see how this one plays out. What a strange predicament to be in here. Oh my...oh my...oooooh God! Okay this segment is insane. It's pretty damn cool, but something sinister is certainly amiss. I knew something was up. Not quite sure what's going on though. It was a different sort of thing. I liked this one the most so far.
8.5/10

"Jailbreak" Written/Directed by Patrick Horvath and co-written by Dallas Hallam

Another interesting introduction of a character and segment. What a depressing looking bar. Also Luschek from Orange is the New Black is the bartender so yeah. Really none of the stuff going on here makes much sense. It's all a big mystery that I hope gets solved. This segment is particularly interesting. Well that was ballsy. Also damn that was brutal. That was actually kind of sad. It was a good ending though.
8.3/10

"The Family"

I liked the transition to this segment. It was simple, but it still has your attention. Oh I wonder what is going on here. It feels a little like the Strangers, but I hope there is more to it. These masks make me uncomfortable. I could only imagine how I would feel if I were actually there. What is happening here?! Well that was an interesting set of events. Holy crap that's awesome! That's terrifying and awesome at the same time. The ending for this one was really well done!
10/10

The ending credits showed the segments and who they were worked on by. Some of the make sense for the ones I put them above. Not sure entirely though. Anyways this was definitely worth the watch. The connections are awesome. It's more connected than just listening to the same radio station in each segment. Some directors surprised me while I was pretty disappointed with The Siren segment. All the others made up for it. It's definitely one of the weirder anthologies in that it's very mysterious. I would recommend giving it a look though.

The Purge: Election Year review

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 16 July 2016 03:46 (A review of The Purge: Election Year)

So I have been following this series since it first came out. I think I watched the first one on a group trip if I remember correctly. I was slightly disappointed with that only because it didn't give me what I wanted. The second one is way better in that it actually did what I was hoping the first one would. It showed the mayhem of the night. So with this I am pretty excited to see how it all rounds about. I'm also excited because James DeMonaco who has been here from the start is still helming it. The masks are always super creative and fun to look at. This is an interesting start. Why can't we have a major wonderful choice this year like Charlie Roan. Leader Caleb is one twisted dude. Wow that guy has lost his mind. Glad they made it so no one is above the "law" here. She is right though. Murder Tourists is a twisted and disturbing new addition to the series. We are definitely going to be seeing those two "lovely" ladies again later. They are definitely trouble makers. Oh well then I didn't see that coming lol. This Purge has barely started and already there have been some interesting and disturbing little bits. I just knew it. That Christmas lights thing actually looks pretty cool and they have some cool masks. Doing some crazy shit over some crazy shit. Dang those are some serious headshots. Those tattoos are insane. I like to see a few aspects of the Purge that they didn't include for the other films. That Lady Liberty mask design is so frigging cool. Ah these are all of those murder tourists. Well I wasn't expecting it to go like that. Holy crap I love Laney! That was too cool! Okay I liked the route they took with that scene. That scene made me think of the crazy traps they had set up in the final Hunger Games. The New Founding Fathers are some serious psychopaths. Well then that didn't go as planned. I can't believe they killed that one off! The way it ended seemed like a slightly possibility for another one. Honestly though I kind of hope they don't. I don't want them to kill the series. There were some great scenes throughout. There were also a lot of unexpected turns. I had a lot of fun once again with this. I still prefer the second overall, but this was a good follow up. If you liked the other ones you will like this one as well.
