My Little Eye review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 4 October 2016 10:03 (A review of My Little Eye)

All I know is that it's like Big Brother with a killer in the mix. It also has Bradley Cooper before he became quite the household name. It has mixed reviews and ratings which is not a particularly good sign. Though at times I have been known to like stuff others don't and vice versa. I have never heard of the director Marc Evans. Apparently not many like his other movies all too much either. I have never heard of David Hilton either. James Watkins helps write here. You would know him from directing The Woman in Black as well as writing and directing Eden Lake. Both of which were excellent horrors. Anyways let us see if this is worth the watch.

The shots they use through this feel pretty odd. The timeline of the story is interesting. It seems to completely skip the first like 6 months they are there and just get to the last days where everything suddenly implodes. The weird thing is that it doesn't feel like that's the case besides some comments and I guess the situation with food. I kind of wish it did show the beginning and then moved along. This is definitely a slow burner so doing that would have been acceptable. It's possible that none of that would be interesting enough I guess, but it could have added to the characters. The deaths were a bit average except maybe two. There were some great twists and turns. The ending was pretty good and messed up.

The acting was a bit subpar. Kris Lemche and Bradley Cooper were the best things about the cast. Everyone else was either just average or kind of terrible. At least the characters had been fairly likable. Emma was the typical lead girl you would expect with very little to set her apart from characters of her type. If they had picked a few more good actors this may have been much better.

The camera style is pretty shotty. The way they capture some moments is just plain awful. The characters are fine, but most of the actors aren't all that great. Bradley Cooper and Kris Lemche were the saving grace. A few deaths and the twists also made this more enjoyable. It's a fairly average film with a very slow pace to it. It's at least a little enjoyable.

Tormented review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 4 October 2016 04:54 (A review of Tormented)

Gore and comedy is up for this entry in my 2016 October line up. I know the deaths are somewhat silly at times while others are brutal. It has a pretty decent young cast which is cool. I have heard of some of Jon Wright's other films, but I have yet to see them. This is the only film from Stephen Prentice. It's rated around average to below, but this never stops me. Let's hope this is my kind of entertainment.

That was actually pretty fun. The kills were glorious and creative except for maybe one that had just been amusing. The dark humor spread throughout was pretty amusing in the most messed up ways. The concept isn't entirely new, but they made this story their own. The ending was great. There is a mid credit scene that semi satisfied something I wanted to see.

I like that they make all the main group pretty much completely unlikable. Some of them might have like one thing about them that is likable. Really the only actually likable people are the ones outside of the main group. I like that this doesn't make you feel bad for the characters because many of them are horrible. I mean of course in real life I wouldn't cheer for this. I thought everyone played their roles well even the ones I have never heard of.

This isn't a movie with any good guys. It's a solid revenge story with dark humor spread throughout. While the characters are unlikable the actors portray them quite well. The deaths are pretty messed up and at times even a bit humorous. It has an excellent ending to wrap it up in a nice little bow. I would recommend this if you are in to British horror and dark humor.

Them review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2016 04:49 (A review of Them)

Now we movie on to a French Romanian horror that also apparently deals with Austrian characters. I don't know anything about this movie. All I know is it seemed like an interesting story. Also it just so happens to be based on a true story. Aren't a lot of these like that these days though? The writer/director duo here also did the American remake of The Eye. That one in my opinion was pretty bad. I hope this is much better. More people like this one better so I guess that's a good sign. It's also fairly short so there is that if it isn't. Anyways time to see what it has to offer.

The opening was interesting and seemed to just add on to the whole thing. The thrills and noises were excellent. I like how we don't really see the killers until the end. The ending was fantastic. To think how this whole thing actually happened is actually pretty disturbing and sad. The whole thing actually reminded me of Eden Lake and The Strangers.

The daughter in the beginning just seemed like a total brat and then she got annoying. I'm sure that part was just to add a little to the story. Otherwise I feel like an asshole. The main couple was great. I really felt like they had good chemistry and I actually cared about them. The killers were interesting and messed up.

I am actually surprised by this one. Of course it's a foreign film, but I wasn't actually sure if I would like it as much as I did. It's genuinely creepy with noises and scares. It doesn't even end up having jump scares in the American way. I really liked the couple and thought they were well acted. The whole thing paced nicely with a great ending. I would actually recommend checking this one out.

Goodnight Mommy review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2016 01:12 (A review of Goodnight Mommy)

I was curious about this one after watching the trailer. The plot seemed interesting enough. I heard it's a heck of a weird one. I haven't heard of anything by the writer/director duo. There isn't even anyone familiar on-screen. I hope this turns out to be a good watch though despite no familiarity. Then again foreign horror has been the go to for thrills these days. Let's see what this has to offer.

I have to say this is so beautifully shot. It's one heck of a ride wondering what will happen next. The twist of the whole thing kind of sidestepped to the more important journey of the whole thing. There are small things that will make you uncomfortable and disturbed sporadically. I like the different route it goes with the genre too. The last third of the movie is where things get really intense. It's not too bloody or gory, but it's done in such a way that you are biting your nails until the last minute. It's all done very well.

For a relatively unknown cast especially for Americans everyone did a fantastic job. Susanne Wuest is gorgeous, but her talent exceeds that. I just love the whole idea they took with her character too. The boys who are newcomers to film did an exceptional job here. The interactions the family has with each other were very interesting and at times quite cringing. You don't know everything that is going on between them, but that makes it all the more intense.

It's an interesting concept that really makes you think about things. The cinematography is stunning. It's creepy without the need of blood or gore. The acting is quite good from everyone. The characters themselves are really interesting. From start to finish you just wonder where it will end up. For me this is the kind of horror that works without gore. I highly recommend checking it out.

Dracula review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 2 October 2016 06:10 (A review of Dracula)

For a horror film fan I am ashamed to say it took me nearly 27 years of my life before I finally watched this version of Dracula. Feel free to rag on me for that. I decided to finally catch up with the rest of you by adding it to my 2016 Horrorthon! This is the only film I have seen from Tod Browning, but Freaks is also on my list for the month. Pretty much all the writers here have been involved with old Universal Horror films with the exception of a few whom only did this one. Also this is the only credit for Max Cohen. It's time to finally see the awesomeness that is Bela Lugosi as Dracula!

This is so much shorter than I thought it would be. The pacing is really uneven. It moves too quickly through things and then other times it moves so slowly. Rarely does anything even all that interesting really happen. The sets are quite fantastical though. Even the added score to the old classic makes for it to be more interesting. The ending was a bit abrupt. Way too much is off-screen here. It's probably because of it being filmed in the 1930s, but it kind of hindered the experience in my opinion.

The acting is of course as you would expect from the 1930s. Bela Lugosi is fun as the Count. Of course the role is a bit over the top, but it worked here. Besides the guy is a legend. He made Dracula who he is for the screen. His looks always got your attention. Dwight Frye as Renfield was so much fun and besides Bela Lugosi probably the best thing about this. You feel sorry for him after Dracula has made him into one of his ghouls. Helen Chandler was beautiful, but as Mina there isn't much else she offered. David Manners is definitely the Keanu Reeves of this Dracula. They both play the same character with the same bland acting. Edward Van Sloan was a decent Van Helsing. I was constantly annoyed though whenever his response to something was a nod of the head or simply walking away without a word. The brides were pretty pointless and I don't even think they are mentioned after their appearance. Everyone else here was practically forgettable.

I'm going to be honest I was pretty disappointed. It is a classic that has a few moments and some interesting characters. The major flaws are in the script and directing. The pacing is wild and the whole thing feels too brief. Many of the supporting characters were forgettable or could have used better actors. Besides Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye the sets and the 1998 musical score were really the only good things about this. I get why it's a classic and that it set up for the future of horror and Dracula. For me though I really wish it would have been better. It's worth a watch to see one of the horrors that started it all though.

After Dark Horrorfest - The Deaths of Ian Stone review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 2 October 2016 07:21 (A review of After Dark Horrorfest - The Deaths of Ian Stone)

I'm starting off my horror month with this one. The premise is what really caught my eye for my October Horrorthon list. It has a few decent actors which is a plus. I also like the After Dark Horrorfest films. I wish they would still do them, but it seems they have sort of died off now. This is Dario Piana's only other movie after the average and unnecessary third part in the Lost Boys trilogy. Brendan Hood has only written one other film that I haven't heard of before. Anyways let's see if this was worth opening my fest with.

It kind of reminded me of a few movies including Haunter, The Matrix, Total Recall, and Groundhog Day. While it may be quite familiar it really does bring it's own creativity to the mix. It's not as gory as I was expecting it to be. That really didn't bother me though. It was one hell of a thrill ride with some interesting twists and turns. It's a whole heck of a lot of fun too. Sure it can be a little cheesy at times especially with the ending. I have to say though I was pleasantly entertained.

I loved the characters. Everyone was interesting and likable. Mike Vogel held his own here. Jaime Murray is stunning as always and makes for a fun time. I thought Michael Feast and Christina Cole has pretty good roles that they played well. The creature designs were kind of cool although they kind of felt and looked like death eaters. It really wasn't bad CGI on them either.

All in all I thought this was a pretty solid start to my October Horrorthon. It's got the creepy factor. It has a few crazy deaths and some decent blood. The creatures were interesting. The characters were all intriguing and well portrayed. It has some good twists and turns. It can be cheesy and has a familiarity about it. Though it does bring it's own fun elements that sets it apart. I would watch it again. After Dark hardly disappoints in my opinion.

Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 30 September 2016 08:15 (A review of Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies)

I'm bored zipping through Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu. Nothing really has my attention. I decided on this because I have seen the first one and it was alright. I have met Andrew Divoff and he is pretty cool so I thought I would go ahead and just watch this one too. It has a few people I didn't know were in it which is cool. You know Jack Sholder doesn't look like like a director. In fact he looks more like a lawyer or politician. Funny thing is he has directed man others including the second Nightmare on Elm Street. Anyways I'm curious as to if this is actually going to be decent or not.

This was really just okay. It was a bit awkward at times. It had some interesting deaths though that's for sure. It's the epitome of be careful what you wish for. Of course you will get what you want, but it will be at a price or taken the wrong way. I mean that lawyer scene was just plain wrong. The casino scene was my favorite because of how crazy and ridiculous it was.

It was cool to see some of the actors I know look fairly younger. Andrew Divoff's acting in these is pretty amusing. The make up effects when he is the Djinn are pretty cool. Holly Fields was pretty awful, but at least she was mostly nice to look at. Apparently Corey Haim took a cameo (that you would never know unless you read the trivia about this) as a joke between him and Holly Fields who was his girlfriend at the time apparently.

There some interesting ideas though with the kills. Andrew Divoff makes an odd but fun villain. The lead was not a very good choice. It had some good roles I wasn't expecting at first. It was nothing special. In fact the first one isn't really all that much better. I've seen worse out there though.

Star Trek Beyond review

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 30 September 2016 02:37 (A review of Star Trek Beyond)

I've been meaning to watch this. When it comes to seeing movies in theaters I sometimes go at the last minute like with this one. These new generation Star Trek films have been pretty great. I love the cast and the new additions are pretty cool as well. It's too bad it's not J.J. Abrams again though. It's going to be a bit sad knowing this is the last time we will see Anton Yelchin in the series. Justin Lin is most notable as the director of parts three to six of the Fast and Furious series. So take that as you will. Simon Pegg actually writes some of the script here. He typically does comedies so it should be interesting to see what he does with an action adventure. This is the first movie I've heard of from writers Doug Jung, Patrick McKay, and John D. Payne. Roberto Orci has been involved in this trilogy from the beginning. He is also known for scripting in several franchises including The Amazing Spider-Man, Transformers, Zorro, and Mission Impossible. I'm hopeful for this to be another good entry to the series.

This was another incredible entry to the Star Trek name. The action is almost non-stop. It's a lot more humorous than the previous in the trilogy. I think they managed to mix it nicely with the drama and action. It has a few cliche moments, but it's kind of expected. There are some interesting twists and turns. I liked some of things they incorporated here with music and links to the original series. The ending was as expected, but it was still good.

It was great seeing the characters we know once again. Everyone is still consistently funny or awesome. The new additions here were pretty great too. Idris Elba is always great as a villain and that's no different here. I don't know what's with women that are made to be aliens that I find attractive. I just happen to think Jaylah was pretty hot and well the character was pretty badass too. I am glad Chekov had a more vital role this time around. It's going to be interesting to see how they send off his character. I hope it will be something respectable and deserving. It's going to be sad not seeing him anymore though. I'm curious to see if the next film will be the last for some characters or this particular generation in general.

I liked this entry a lot. The connections to the original series were great. The characters were still awesome. The new characters were great. The story had a nice mixture of comedy, action, and drama. It can be a little cliche, but really it was a great watch. It should be interesting to see what happens now.

Jaws: The Revenge review

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 29 September 2016 09:02 (A review of Jaws: The Revenge)

What I would like to know is how the hell did they manage to snag the great Michael Caine for this!? Can it really get worse than part three as they say? I'm kind of nervous to find out, but I like to finish what I start. I have never seen anything from Joseph Sargent although he directed the original Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. I have also never heard of the writer for this one. I am not expecting much considering how low this is rated and how people tend to despise this somehow even more than the previous. Let me just go ahead and get this over with.

Well the plot is a bit silly that's for sure. I will admit though I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. It was actually better than part three by quite a bit. They ditched the stupid animation that made the previous one look extra cheap. The animatronics were much better as well. The death count was extremely low here, but in fact I think the ones that happened were done well. It does have some stuff that makes no sense and it does indeed hit points of stupidity. Other than that I was kind of entertained.

The characters were likable. Of course a few things seem to be illogical given the characters' histories, but they kind of explain it in a sense. Jake was one of my favorite characters although I wish Mario Van Peebles had just used his regular voice. I got a little annoyed with his accent at times because it seemed a bit cheesy and he faltered a few times. Lorraine Gary was one hot grandma lol. On a serious note her character felt a bit corny but understandably so.

Don't hate me for thinking this wasn't so bad. I mean it is, but I really don't think it's the worse of the series. The acting wasn't half bad, but a few characters could use some work. There were some silly ideas and others that worked well. Thank goodness for the practical effects returned. The low death count was fine as they utilized the ones they had well. I guess it was better than I thought because of my extremely low expectations.

Jaws 3 review

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 29 September 2016 07:09 (A review of Jaws 3)

Despite the downhill spiral of the series this actually has a pretty decent cast. It also happens to be the one where they start super imposing the shark into scenes that it isn't actually in which is kind of lame. This is Joe Alves only movie and we don't need to really guess why that is. Carl Gottlieb once again returns to write this sequel. Richard Matheson who is responsible for many quite good films joins the writers group for this. I don't really know anything much about the other writers as I haven't seen anything else from them. The premise of the whole thing does seem a little interesting though silly.

Yeah so that was pretty terrible! The story was awful. The execution was poor. I feel bad for the actually decent actors who took part in this. It did have some decent deaths though. The way the whole thing looked was just painful to endure. The shark was way too stiff at pretty much all times. Even the shark from part two was better than this one. They truly had some terrible animatronics for this entry. There were a lot of dumb moments that were easily avoidable. Given all that these brothers have been through you would think they would avoid open water and sharks altogether.

The acting from the well known actors wasn't bad, but the script they had to deal with made them seem amateurish. Surprisingly this was Lea Thompson's first film! I swear it's crazy to see big stars start off in stuff like this. The characters make a lot of dumb decisions and seem to really act against who they are at times. I mean seriously the whole set up here shouldn't even happen given the history of the Brody family. I guess the writers just didn't care about their continuity.

This was definitely one of the most unnecessary and illogical sequels. There is no reason it should exist given the history of the characters. The shark effects were terrible. Really the only good thing were the deaths. It was interesting to see big stars here, but the script really took them down. It's a waste of time and should definitely be avoided.
