Jaws 2 review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 29 September 2016 03:58 (A review of Jaws 2)

Yeah I know I must be crazy to be checking these sequels out now. When it's free it's free though. So thanks to Netflix I decided to see how terrible they actually were. Jeannot Szwarc actually directed the Supergirl movie that is considered pretty awful. He has also directed many shows I watch including Supernatural and Heroes. Carl Gottlieb actually was a writer in the first Jaws. Why he decided to do this sequel is beyond me though. This is the first of the series for Howard Sackler. Anyways let's see if this really is as bad as they say.

So basically it's just a rehash of the first movie. I mean there is seriously a lot of stuff that happens here that happened there. It does have a higher body count which I like. It's really not that impressive though. They way the short is dispatched was pretty lame as well. The situations they get into here kind of just made me laugh.

Roy Scheider is really the only good thing about this one. He seems to genuinely try unlike most of the others here. A lot of the characters are dimwits who make poor decisions. The acting from some is pretty goofy as well. I couldn't help but laugh at Donna Wilkes whenever she reacted to the shark. The others really didn't leave too much of an impact on me.

I can see why many people despised this sequel. It's way to close to being like the first one down to some mirror reactions and decisions. The kill count is high, but some of the deaths are silly. The acting and characters were somewhat flawed with the exception of Roy Scheider. It's not the worse thing I have seen, but it's not complete crap. I wouldn't watch it again however.

Midnight Special review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 28 September 2016 11:42 (A review of Midnight Special)

I am surprised this is rated so average. I would have expected something much higher given the cast and crew. Plus the trailer looked absolutely incredible. Jeff Nichols is the mastermind who brought us Mud and the up coming Loving that I absolutely want to see. I don't know why I have taken so long to watch this. It's time now though.

That was so much different than I expected, but so well done. It's a beautiful film with special effects used quite well. I was never entirely sure what was about to happen. There was one scene where I reacted audibly. It's a slow burner for sure, but I'd say it really pays off in the end. The story is well put together and actually feels pretty original despite having familiar aspects. The ending was intriguing.

The characters were all rather likable and interesting. Everyone did a good job with their roles even Kirsten Dunst who typically bores me. I did think they should have done more with some characters though it's a minor gripe.

I thought this was quite a unique and different experience. It may not be everyone's cup of tea as it's not fast paced or has very much in ways of action. The performances and the atmosphere of the whole thing really make it worth while. Jeff Nichols is really making a presence in the film industry. If he keeps making unique films like this then he will continuously be one to look out for.

Mechanic: Resurrection review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 28 September 2016 07:17 (A review of Mechanic: Resurrection)

I actually really enjoyed the first one. It had a good twist and some fun action. This one did catch my interest with the trailer. It has a pretty interesting main cast. This is directed by Dennis Gansel who did We Are the Night (an interesting look at a group of female vampires) as well as The Wave (The German film about an experiment I really want to see). Philip Shelby has only written one other film I have heard of called Survivor which stars Pierce Brosnan and Milla Jovovich. Rachel Long and Brian Pittman have worked on the same three movies all of which I've heard of. This is Tony Mosher's only writing credit. With this many writers I can only hope that they managed to keep the story interesting. I do find it interesting that the first one didn't make enough to warrant a sequel, but they decided to make one anyways.

The writing and directing here make for some pretty ridiculous moments. The way things happen and such just feel a bit amateur sadly. A few things go unexplained which is probably because they actually couldn't think of a way for it to actually be possible. The fight scenes and the preparation for the assassinations were pretty cool though. The plot was just generic though. There really is nothing different about this. They even said that the idea comes from Jason Statham's other movie Killer Elite about the same thing. That's just a bit lazy.

Wow some of the acting here is subpar. Not sure if it's because of the mediocre writing or if it's because this is the director's first Hollywood film though. I have seen much better from Jessica Alba. Sam Hazeldine actually pulled off being a villain though. Some characters were utilized poorly as one in particular just disappears for the rest of the movie with no acknowledgement or anything. The decisions some of the characters make are just silly.

So there was really nothing special about this movie. The action was the main attraction. With that I wasn't disappointed. The acting and characters here were at times just pathetic. A lot of things felt out of place or just happen. I couldn't take it seriously. The first one was so much smarter and well thought out. Even the twist at the end felt pretty obvious. If you are just looking for decent action with little care for anything else this is for you. If you were expecting more than that then this sequel should be avoided.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 28 September 2016 08:42 (A review of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping)

It's from the incredibly funny people of The Lonely Island group. I kind of missed out on it while it was in theaters sadly. At first I had thought it was some dumb new documentary from Justin Bieber or something until I actually watched the trailer. That was before the theaters of course. All three of them wrote this one. The only other film the wrote together was Extreme Movie (which in my opinion is pretty hilarious). Jorma Taccone also wrote and directed the MacGruber movie. Akiva directed Hot Rod as well as The Watch. Anyways the cast is pretty cool (besides Maya Rudolph whom I despise) and it has some great cameos.

This reminded me of quite of shows from MTV. The I Love the 80s, TMZ of course, among other stuff. Some of the music is definitely offensive, but that is part of the joke. The jokes and music were pretty funny though. They even made the gross jokes make sense for the situations. It had a few misses with it's jokes, but really nothing that made it lame. The scene with the wolves was probably one of my favorites. The style of the movie is pretty different and definitely makes it stand out. It feels a lot like at times that it is a parody of Justin Bieber. Allegedly according to the filmmakers it wasn't intentional. I though the whole idea was pretty funny and well executed. There was an extra scene during the credits that was kind of amusing.

The characters are great and well acted. Everyone added their own special quality to the whole mix. Owen was probably the most likable of the main characters. I always enjoy the underdog characters. The cameos were incredible and it looked as if they really had fun. Some of them poked fun at themselves which was awesome to see. Who would have known that some of them were even good at comedic timing. I am curious to know if the stuff at the awards ceremonies were more unlisted cameos or if it was footage used from something else. Either way it was cool to see who all showed up in this.

For me these kinds of movies are a nice getaway from the real world. I always enjoy the stuff from Lonely Island no matter how absurd it gets at times. The parody atmosphere of this was great with many jokes to look out for. The characters were great and the cameos made for some hilarious moments. The writing was excellent. I really couldn't expect anything less than fun from these guys. If you are looking for something new and funny to watch I say give it a shot. Unless of course you are easily offended.

A Lonely Place to Die review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 27 September 2016 05:40 (A review of A Lonely Place to Die)

This has been on my "to watch" list for quite some time so I figured I would go ahead and check it out. It has a small but fairly recognizable cast. Also the premise does sound quite interesting. The only film I have seen by Julian Gilbey is one of the better segments from ABC's of Death 2. Although I have heard of some of the other work he and his brother have done. Anyways it's time to quit stalling and see if this was worth the wait.

Okay I have to say this was definitely interesting. The cinematography and settings are absolutely stunning. It's actually pretty fast paced and intense. I never knew what would be happening. The kills were not anything particularly new, but when they happened it was shocking. There were some good twists and turns.

The cast did a great job with good characters. There wasn't a whole lot of development among them, but it wasn't particularly necessary here. No one is safe in this which puts it ahead of other films like it.

I think it's a tad bit underrated. It has good characters, beautiful cinematography, and unexpected events. If you haven't seen it yet I definitely recommend it.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 27 September 2016 04:48 (A review of Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker)

Alright so we are now at the end of the road for this series as I've already seen the remake. I hear mixed feelings about this one. Some say it's the best of the sequels others say it's terrible. I also hear that Mickey Rooney is a bit of a hypocrite as he hated the first of this series but stars here. Brian Yuzna who directed the previous installment returns as just a writer this time. Martin Kitrosser who helped write the third to fifth films in the Friday the 13th movie takes over here. The story here really reminds me of Halloween III: Season of the Witch meets The Nightmare Before Christmas. Anyways it's time to see if this really is one of the better entries or another waste of time.

Of course this was a bit silly. The actually managed a pretty decent twist which I should have seen coming, but it was very well down. That's pretty surprising considering this is a cheap sequel. The kills are different and amusing. There were some bits here and there that were kind of stupid. One thing in particular is that the kid still had the toy that killed his father for some reason. Anyways while the plot is silly it manages to be somewhat interesting.

The acting here is a little wishy washy. The characters themselves were likable though. I liked seeing Neith Hunter as Kim again. I'm not sure if her and Lonnie were the same as the ones from the previous film. It's highly likely though. As for Clint Howard it seems he is simply playing another guy named Ricky. Mickey Rooney doesn't take the role serious of course. Although he definitely proves at times to be much better than the rest.

It's definitely one of the better sequels. It's not amazing, but the nice twist actually helps it. It was cool to see some old faces. The new characters were interesting, but some of their acting could have used improvement. The kills were unique. Despite the sometimes crap acting, silly plot, and lame bits it managed to be watchable.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 26 September 2016 01:55 (A review of Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation)

Alright it's time for part four the reject that was meant to be part three. Apparently there is no indication that this Ricky is the same. At this point it doesn't really matter. Brian Yuzna has plenty of well known films of which I have only seen Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (Written) and Return of the Living Dead Part 3 (Directed). Richard N. Gladstein who apparently had some on-screen roles in the first three films writes for this sequel. Arthur Gorson from the previous film returns as one of the writers. Woody Keith known for working with Brian Yuzna contributes to the script. Lastly S.J. Smith who also wrote the dreadfully terrible Children of the Corn: Revelation unfortunately contributes here as well.

This was so far off from what the original was. Besides the name, a character named Ricky, and a scene on a TV set from part three this doesn't feel like the same series. Now I can see why the filmmakers from part three declined this one. It's like Nightmare on Elm Street with witches. It's one weird gross out movie. There are some moments that were just uncomfortable to watch. One such example has a woman get bug goo dripped on her face in a very provocative looking manner. It tries to have surprise twists, but everything was just way too obvious. It could be that I have seen so many movies that some things just feel that way. The roach symbolism and such was really gross. I just cannot do roaches. They creep me the hell out. So I was uneasy through the whole thing which I guess is one win for the filmmakers.

Neith Hunter is one good looking woman. I think I have found a new 90s crush. She is also by far the best lead of the series. She has some dull moments, but mostly she was fairly decent. Clint Howard once again proves he is such a weird guy. It's hard to believe he is related to the great Ron Howard. This movie is all about making guys look like disgusting pigs. Although Hank does improve his behavior. It's a bit strange seeing as the filmmakers are guys. There weren't really that many likable characters besides Kim and later Hank. At least they got a couple of decent actors this time who didn't botch things up too much.

It's definitely one of those movies that uses a known title to get attention. It really doesn't belong with the Silent Night series, but as it's own film it's somewhat entertaining. It's really gross and uncomfortable at times, but I get grossed out when it comes to anything with roaches. The acting is not great, but it's far better than previous installments. It has a few likable characters, but the guys are portrayed like creeps for no real reason. It's definitely the better of the sequels I have watched so far.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out! review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 25 September 2016 10:30 (A review of Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!)

Alright so I'm now going for part three. This is when things begin to become a little more supernatural and different than the previous films. At least it does have a few surprising actors like Richard Beymer and Laura Harring! There is also the legendary horror actor Bill Moseley. I've never seen anything from Monte Hellman, but I have heard of at least one other film. It looks like both the writers have only done two films with Arthur Gorson being the only one who returns for part four. Anyways let's see how this fairs in the series. I hope it's at least better than the second one.

This movie is constantly pissing me off. They say Ricky had half his head shot off in the last film which didn't happen. They also make the flashbacks from the first movie seem like Ricky was Billy and an only child. They make comments as if Ricky was the killer since part one. With a body count that includes eight (not including archive footage and the scene from a movie on TV) most of the kills are off-screen. The ones we do see are pretty lame. The results of some of the kills are gruesome though. Also they clearly had no idea what they were doing as the Doctor apparently seemed to have no recollection of Laura telling him where she was going. Then randomly he does remember like what the hell? The writing here is just trash! Now instead of being naughty he just has to see red.

A lot of the acting is pretty bad even from fairly well known Laura Harring. The writing makes Richard Beymer seem slightly amateur as well. Bill Moseley does a great Frankenstein impression. I also admit his character design is pretty neat. At least they do a continuation of pretty corny lead actors. Although Samantha Scully is pretty awful she is nowhere near as bad as Eric Freeman.

It's barely better than the previous installment. It's a shame that most of the deaths are off-screen. Also the writing and directing was really off. It sometimes felt like they had forgotten what happened in previous scenes and even the previous movies. That or they just didn't care to make sense of it all. The acting is pretty bad and the characters are pretty boring. Maybe if it was it's own film it may have been kind of better. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 24 September 2016 06:09 (A review of Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2)

So now we enter part two. This is considered to be even sillier than the first one due to the main actor. Apparently this would have been basically a short, but they wanted to make it feature length so they added archive footage and a ton of end credits. I mean that's just a tad lazy don't you think? This is the only film from writer/director Lee Harry that I've seen or heard of. As for the other writers this is the only film they are credited for. It also has a cult following and oddly enough it's due to campiness (whereas it was intended to be silly).

Okay this was just lathered with terribleness. The first half has Ricky recaping the more important parts of the previous film with tons of archive footage. Some of which seems to be altered slightly from what I remember. It could also be that I didn't pay too much attention the first time. Also nearly most of the stuff he "remembers" should not be possible. Of course I knew the first half would be a long recap. I just think it could have been done differently or something. I felt this did give one bit of closure. I wasn't as impressed with the kills or plot line this time. The last shot was just stupid and takes this to a level of supernatural being. I guess the best moments is the rampage that includes the infamous "Garbage Day" line and the final kill.

The acting was really bad from just about everyone this time around. None of the characters were all that likable. I didn't even think Ricky was understandable like his brother. Billy was broken, but Ricky was just a psychopath. I find it ridiculous that they went and casted someone based on looks rather than their skill as an actor. I don't understand why they made Mother Superior look like that other than maybe because it was a new actress.

This was such a cheesefest. Unlike the previous film though I found this to be rotten. It was just dumb through almost the whole thing. I was hoping for the so bad it's fun kind of thing. For me I just wasn't entertained. Eric Freeman is just so awful and over the top I was just annoyed. There were no really good characters except maybe the Doctor. It has a few memorable moments. Sadly it is just crap.

Silent Night, Deadly Night review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 23 September 2016 11:44 (A review of Silent Night, Deadly Night)

I have never watched this series so I figured I would go ahead and check it out. It is considered a cult classic though so there's that. This is the only film from the director and writers I have seen so far. The ratings are fairly average so I'm not expecting much from it. I do hope it manages to at least be somewhat entertaining.

The general plot is actually a fairly neat idea. Had this been big budget I believe it would have been an excellent movie. The kills were well done and even kind of disturbing. There were a few dumb bits, but overall I was pleasantly entertained. The ending was one of the corniest parts, but I liked it. I do wish a few things happened, but unfortunately they seemed to be left behind.

Now the characters were all fairly decent. Mother Superior is the Nurse Ratched (of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest if you don't get the reference) of this film. She makes you despise her up until the end. Then there are the people just there for the body count with a young Linnea Quigley (horror legend) among them. His coworkers seemed like decent people except for the slimebag he was working under. Anyways I kind of felt sorry for Billy. He was just a really broken kid that was pushed past his limits. You don't normally see that kind of thing with slasher films. That in my opinion made this stand out more.

After watching this I can see why it's a cult classic. The script is pretty corny. The acting is at times even cornier. Some of the actors did well oddly enough while others were just silly. It's also back when most child actors were terrible. The kills here were the best thing. It didn't accomplish a few things I hoped it would though. All in all I would say this cheesefest was actually pretty entertaining. I will say it's definitely a guilty pleasure.
