Big Driver review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 24 October 2014 10:41 (A review of Big Driver)

I love me some Stephen King so I decided to check it out. Now that I see it's a Lifetime movie I'm a bit skeptical on how good it will be. I do enjoy Maria Bello though. It's like Misery meets I Spit on Your Grave. Of course it isn't as gruesome as something like the latter. Lifetime movies as I've seen usually are pretty cheesy and are super low budget. This however felt way different. It was very much a Stephen King style movie story and content wise, but you could also tell it was a Lifetime kind of my by the editing and filming styles. One thing I notice in Stephen King stories is that a lot of characters experience vivid dreams and personified imaginations. The acting is great especially from Maria Bello. There were some good twists and turns some of which I didn't expect. I loved Tom he was awesome. The ending was a bit awkward and felt misplaced. Anyways it was a good watch, but certainly not the best of Stephen King. If you love him then you will still want to see this for sure.

V/H/S Viral review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 24 October 2014 04:33 (A review of V/H/S Viral)

I have been waiting for this since I knew it was coming out. I loved the first 2 and I'm hoping this one will be just as enjoyable. I hear there was supposed to be another segment, but as of now only 4 exist. Nacho Vigalondo (Open Windows), Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead), and Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl) are the more well known of the directors. I can see that they took the idea of viral in a correct manner and made pretty much all of the stories about trying to become famous.

"Vicious Circles" by Marcel Sarmiento
This is the wraparound story for the whole shebang. It starts off pretty happy and then quickly spirals into chaos. It's pretty crazy and off the wall. There are a few Easter Eggs thrown in from previous films if you pay close attention. Whatever is going on it's really interesting albeit very unusual. The Mexican scene was definitely the best scene of the wraparound segment. There are a few little extra subplots to give us a few more stories to look at. The taxi scene was ridiculous and had the worst acting. I'm not entirely sure what happened there at the end, but it was interesting. Good ole Beethoven making us nervous. Looking back at the whole of the story it makes a little bit of sense in an odd way. 6.7/10

"Dante the Great" by Gregg Bishop
This one is an oddball too for sure. The story is actually pretty original. Justin Welborn who plays Dante is such an underrated actor. I thought he did pretty well with this role. Some of the magic is pretty cool and crazy. I didn't see the ending coming which is always good. I'm actually glad this one wasn't too gory because it didn't need to be. Some people might complain that a lot of this one is not really found footage. I like that they tried to do something a bit different with this one. Not a bad way to start off in my opinion. 7.3/10

"Parallel Monsters" by Nacho Vigalondo
Wow! That certainly escalated to something unexpected. I don't think I would ever want to visit a parallel universe of my life if something like this were possible. If you don't like foreign films it doesn't matter, because this segment will still keep you interested to see the outcome. I didn't see any of that coming. You can tell this director was involved with The ABCs of Death anthology because of the craziness. Although there are things left without explanation you really don't mind it. I could see this being a feature length if done a little differently. I loved it though. It's definitely the best of this installment. 9.5/10

"Bonestorm" by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead
This segment is pretty straightforward. The guys are arrogant little pricks who are pretty much asking for trouble to happen. So there are worse things than the drug cartels. It's kind of silly in a good way. It's the worst of the segments, but it doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. This is more of an adrenaline rush than horror though. I love how they treat the secondary characters with nicknames that we as an audience would give since we never learn anything about them. This one kind of ended abruptly which I didn't like since there was obviously more to the story. 7/10

Overall the segments are pretty odd. With the exception of Parallel Monsters and the Mexican party scene in the wraparound segment I was pretty disappointed in this one. It had some good moments, but it was overall lacking in charisma. This is definitely nowhere near as good as the first two. It's not overall the best thing I've ever seen, but it's far from the worst. I just wish it actually tried instead of making kind of a jumbled up fiasco. I did enjoy it though. If they make a part four I will still be watching and hopefully it will be an improvement. 7.6/10

The Town That Dreaded Sundown review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 24 October 2014 04:57 (A review of The Town That Dreaded Sundown)

I haven't seen the original one so I am basing this on it as a stand alone. I have actually been to Texarkana before so it's interesting to see a small real town I've actually been to and seen in film. For a horror film without a theatrical release the cast is actually pretty good. The fact that the director of the previous film has some involvement in this is actually pretty cool. It's pretty interesting that this is more like it's own film rather than a remake. It's set up that the previous film was based on the real life killings, but in this that film is just a film. I think it's a nice spin on something people would just see as a simple remake. Now most of the death scenes aren't that original, but the sheer brutality involved definitely pumps your adrenaline. The acting is pretty good especially from good ole Denis O'Hare. I think people moved on to newer things too quickly at least in my opinion. I have to say I didn't see that twist coming at all. It felt like a lot of stuff could have been done better. Everything just felt really rushed. It's not bad, but it could have been better. It kind of reminded me a lot of the Scream series. It had its moments anyways.

Step Up All In review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 23 October 2014 02:45 (A review of Step Up All In)

I actually really enjoy this series. I didn't even know that this existed until the day it come out though. My favorite so far has been the second part so it's good to see Briana Evigan return to the series. It has many of the minor and major characters from the previous installments which is great. Is this movie necessary? Not really. Will it still be enjoyable? I think so. I find it interesting a lot of minor actors here were also guest stars on Supernatural and Smallville at some point in time. The beginning is so hilariously awkward. I am hoping we get a lot of Moose because I was very disappointed he was barely in the previous installment. Briana Evigan is such a babe for sure. There are some pretty great characters. I think Chad is pretty hilarious. I have to say the lab scene has to be one of the coolest I have seen in the entire series. I don't know if it's just me or not, but I love it when you could hear the foot steps and the chants of the dancers. It definitely has some slight differences in a series I didn't think could have too much originality. I actually really enjoyed this. In fact it's probably my favorite movie of the series to be honest. The choreography is fantastic. There are some truly interesting little stories told throughout each of the main crews dances. The ending was great and threw in some unexpected little spectacles. Don't doubt this one just because it's the fifth part. Give it a shot and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It's not an original storyline, but really what is when it comes to dance movies.

Annabelle review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 20 October 2014 03:43 (A review of Annabelle)

Okay so I actually liked The Conjuring and thought it was really interesting. I remember seeing the Annabelle doll and thinking it was one creepy looking thing. Then I saw they were planning a spin-off centered around the creepy doll and knew I wanted to see it. I would like to see other things from The Conjuring get spin-offs too. I'm sure they all have an interesting story to tell. Although when I saw who the director is I have my doubts on it. I think they should have had James Wan direct this instead of some director who hasn't made anything good yet. Is it a coincidence or simply on purpose that the main actress has the same name as the doll? Anyways I'm still going to watch this to see what it has going for it. One thing I don't get is why people would ever buy such creepy looking dolls for anyone. I have to say the back story for how Annabelle was created is actually pretty intriguing. Although it's kind of a typical sort of story where the husband is never really home and therefore doesn't believe anything is happening. It unfortunately doesn't bring much new to the genre. The ending was kind of lame and cheesy. There were a few scenes that were truly creepy though, but most of relied on cheap jump scares. I have to say I was highly disappointed with this. It had so much potential and I was hyped up because the doll looked like it would be so twisted. It just fell short.

Young Ones review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 18 October 2014 04:31 (A review of Young Ones)

I remember seeing the trailer for this and being instantly intrigued by the concept of this post apocalyptic coming of age story. Hell this could even take place after The Road another movie that had starred Kodi Smit-McPhee but now all grown up. There are some great casting choices here although the cast itself isn't too big. It's an interesting bit of information I didn't realize from the trailer, but this is directed by Gwyneth Paltrow's little brother. The cinematography of such a desolate land is actually kind of beautiful. It's a wonder that even without water we can still be so technologically advanced. I mean there are some pretty nifty looking gadgets and such in this. Well it looks like Elle Fanning is trying to follow in her sisters footsteps and grow up too fast. I swear it's hard to find a character to like in this because everyone is so damaged. There are some pretty messed up scenes throughout that are quite unexpected. The acting is pretty good from everyone. I say this is one of Nicholas Hoults' best performances. It's a bittersweet movie for sure. I have to say that the ending was pretty good. I think some things should have been answered instead of being left in the wind. I think it's worth checking out at least once.

Camp X-Ray review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 18 October 2014 01:35 (A review of Camp X-Ray)

Now I'm not a fan of Kristen Stewart, but this looked interesting so I thought I would give it a try. I have to admit the premise reminds me of The Boys of Abu Ghraib except the main character is a woman and it takes place in Guantanamo Bay. The acting is phenomenal and I was truly impressed by Kristen Stewart here. This is by far her best performance and a good move to better her career. Also I am sure Payman Maadi's performance added some charisma to Kristen Stewart. I liked how it ended as it went an unexpected route. It was interesting and kind of creative how they did the credits. It's a very bittersweet movie. I think it deserves to be seen. Don't underestimate it just because of Kristen Stewarts previous roles.

Planes: Fire & Rescue review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 17 October 2014 05:46 (A review of Planes: Fire & Rescue)

So I actually liked the first one. I thought it was cute and funny. However, I don't think this sequel should have been made. The premise just seems ridiculous, but I'm going to watch this anyways to see if it's worth t for the rest of the crowd. It does have a huge and excellent cast though so that gives me a little hope. I think it's odd that most of the planes from the first movie didn't even show up for this one. The characters are interesting enough. I do think the world of cars and planes is becoming kind of it's own cliche though. It's the same basic concept for each movie. The main character is always a bit of a failure who needs to train for something under another character who doesn't have much respect for the said main character. Also the character who trains is always a grumpy older vehicle who has been through rough times. I mean there isn't much originality, but there are some interesting little scenes here and there. I like the random pop culture references that I'm pretty sure kids watching this wouldn't get. It is a really short movie that's for sure. There is a little extra scene if you stay through the credits. It wasn't a very eventful watch. It was honestly kind of boring it wasn't awful it just isn't attention grabbing.

You're Not You review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 17 October 2014 02:45 (A review of You're Not You)

I watched the trailer for this awhile back and I knew this was something I should check out. It has a stellar cast and some big names I didn't even know were in it. I do find it interesting that this movie about ALS has come out after the big wave of ALS ice bucket challenges. I have to say this is such a powerful and emotional movie. This is by far one of Hilary Swank's best performances. In fact all the performances in this are really well done. This also shows that people can change for the better. Sometimes life is hard for no reason, but we have to live each day like it's easy. It must be hard living with such a disease or any disease for that matter. I hope people see this movie and learn about what they are helping to cure. This was such a great movie. I highly recommend watching it. It's hard to get through this without feeling deeply emotional and I am a guy. There is a little extra during the credits that is a sweet way to wrap it up.

This Is Where I Leave You review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 16 October 2014 06:00 (A review of This Is Where I Leave You)

This is directed by Shawn Levy who has had some hits and misses. For me he has made hits more than misses though. It helps that he has a pretty great cast to work with. So this isn't a new concept as it's been done a few times. I mean now it's becoming hard to think of anything truly original, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth watching. Now that being said it does however have it's own little twist to it. I mean I know nothing about Judaism. So it's interesting to learn about what Shivah is. The mother in this reminds me a lot of the mother from Two and a Half Men. The characters are all really interesting with various clashing personalities. Alright so this wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be from the synopsis. This has to be one of the most dysfunctional and craziest family I have seen on film. I actually really enjoyed this. The ending was wonderful although I wished somethings that didn't happen would have happened. It definitely put me in my feelings where I thought about my family and how we act together. It's great and I think it should be watched as a family.
