Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 14 October 2014 05:50 (A review of Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort)Okay so yes there are 6 of these and I have liked the first four. Although part 5 was pretty crappy and ridiculous I decided to check this out anyways. I mean it can't be worse than that load of crap. I have only seen a teaser trailer and not much else. That alone is good as it doesn't give anything away for the story. I mean not there is much mystery if you know the series. This is also directed by Valeri Milev who has a movie coming out eventually called Re-Kill which I am super excited about. That alone gives me some hope. So it starts off decent enough with one alright kill and one that was actually kind of different and messed up. In fact some of the kills were actually kind of creative. Some of the characters are actually interesting and not your typical poorly developed characters. I mean it looks like they at least tried to make an interesting plot. One rule of horror films is never mess with a crazy person. It will always bite you in the ass. I think this definitely took notes from part 5 as what not to do in your film. Okay so some of costumes look really awkward particularly Jackson's outfit. The thought the hunting scene was well filmed. I did find it interesting that it actually gives us time to know the main characters instead of killing people before the even develop. We still get a fair share of kills throughout which is good of course. There is definitely a lot more in the nudity department than the previous films which is used mostly to keep your attention when it starts to drag a little. It helps that the women are pretty hot particularly Jillian who has probably one of the most twisted deaths of the movie. It's definitely one of the most disturbing of the entries. I have to say I didn't expect it to end the way it did. It's definitely much better than part 5 in my opinion. If you enjoy the Wrong Turn series you will like this one too. It even leaves way for a possible sequel which will most likely happen as long as people are still willing to make one. It did surprise me. I mean it's by no means the best, but it's entertaining.

Lucy review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 12 October 2014 01:06 (A review of Lucy)Luc Besson is a pretty good writer and has made a few good movies himself. The story looked rather interesting when I saw the trailer. So I hope that not all the good stuff was spoiled. There is some pretty cool imagery put in throughout the movie that is interesting to the story as a whole. I think the concept and idea is really neat. I wonder though how the world really would be if we had full control of our brains. It kind of feels a little bit like Transcendence which also features Morgan Freeman. Lucy has to be one of the most badass females I've seen on film. It is a very visually stunning movie. I think it was a little short and could have been a little more fleshed out. It was an interesting and fun watch. The ending was great. It's definitely worth checking out for sure.

Mockingbird review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 10 October 2014 09:17 (A review of Mockingbird)This is from the director of The Strangers so it should be pretty good. There aren't any real big names most people would know, but there are quite a few familiar faces. One thing for sure is you can tell this was produced by The Purge people and it fits along a similar story as The Strangers. I will break this into different sections for each family.
Once Upon a Time in 1995:
Well that is quite a way to start a movie! I have to say I didn't expect that to happen at all. I can tell this is either going to be one crazy movie or it grabbed my attention only to lose it later.
The Family:
It starts off with an adorable family who are getting ready to go out for a trip or something. It does a nice job of building the family members and letting us know who they are. It's strange how they can't turn off the video which seems like something that shouldn't be very possible. Things are starting to escalate and get really strange in a good way. I think this is a good enough reason never to enter any crazy contests. The way they react to things is pretty realistic. One scene I caught was pretty sad to see, but I should have expected it I suppose.
The Woman:
I'm not sure how I feel about her yet. Her story just started and it felt kind of bland so far. It's interesting that everyone thinks they won something though. I think as we get to know her more we find that she is having a rough patch in life. There is an interesting little thing I noticed with her storyline that has my attention now. It must be even scarier to be alone in this kind of situation. She has a lot of the jump scares of the movie. I don't think I like the idea of having people being able to know everything I am doing in my home without my consent.
The Clown:
Okay so this one is pretty interesting. The guy here is pretty much a loser. He wants to please those involved by any means which is never a good sign. He is probably the most enthusiastic about the whole situation. His storyline kind of reminds of the movie 13 Sins where the guy had to different odd things to get more money. I feel like this guy has more comedy in his story. It's kind of funny all the crazy stuff they make him do.
This was pretty crazy and intense. I sort of figured out what would happen about midway, but I didn't expect it to play out fully the way it did. I have to say I didn't see that twist coming at the end. It's a very interesting watch. It's definitely not what I expected it to be and pretty original. It's great for a one time watch. It leaves a bit unanswered, but it's more about the point in time the movie deals with. I could see a sequel being made.

Deliver Us from Evil review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 10 October 2014 06:37 (A review of Deliver Us from Evil)I thought this looked pretty interesting and a unique new idea of the typical possession. Scott Derrickson is no stranger to horror movies let alone of the possession type. Although of his films I have seen so far only Sinister was enjoyable. It has a pretty decent cast which gives it some promise, but then again a good cast can only do so much if poor directing is involved. Now people this movie clearly states it is inspired by actual events, but that doesn't necessarily mean that those events are adapted in this film (which they aren't as this is a fictional case). I have to say the zoo seen was pretty cool to see and it was actually pretty creepy. There is some really messed up stuff throughout this that I haven't seen done before that really kept me hooked. The jump scares are really good in this and actually have been getting me pretty good. There is actually some pretty wicked fight scenes although only a few of them throughout since it's a horror film. I have to say Butler is actually my favorite character in this. The suspense is great. It's definitely a must watch for fans of possession movies. I thought that there were some interesting elements throughout that I can't explain as they are vital to the plot, but I do say this is one of my favorite possession movies.

See No Evil 2 (2014) review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 10 October 2014 03:20 (A review of See No Evil 2 (2014))I have been wanting to see this for awhile as I enjoyed the first one. The Soska sisters didn't really impress me too much with their ABCs of Death 2 entry, but I won't let that stop me from checking this out. I mean Danielle Harris, Katharine Isabelle, and Chelan Simmons wowza that's a nice selection of horror babes. Some of the death scenes were kind of lame, but some of the others were more interesting. At first it's pretty cliche and doesn't really bring anything new to the genre. That is until near the end where something caught me off guard and I was shocked. The ending actually made the whole thing worth while. The first half was just okay, but some time after midway it started to get really interesting. It's been several years since I saw the first one so it's hard to say if this is better or not. You will probably like this if you liked the first one plus Danielle Harris gives it some brownie points.

Flight 7500 review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 9 October 2014 05:57 (A review of Flight 7500)I have been wanting to see this for awhile now, but I've hesitated because I'm not sure if I have the whole movie. Some sources say it's about 80 minutes while others say 95 minutes. So is the version for America cut or something I don't know. I decided to check it out anyways. I'm not a big fan of The Grudge movies but, the cast is great which is promising. I almost didn't recognize Scout Taylor-Compton when she showed up. She is probably the most interesting looking character as the rest are all just ordinary looking people. For the most part it's pretty creepy. The acting was pretty good and the characters were interesting enough. The problem was the execution was kind of bland since nothing really happens for most of the movie. It was rather disappointing after waiting such a long time to finally see this. The ending was the redeeming factor for this. It had a nice twist which was good, but it was rather depressing. It's definitely a more psychological kind of horror than most that comes out these days. Then they had to add in the very last scene which pretty much killed it again. This could have been so much better, but it just fell short in the end. It wasn't too bad though.

Silent Retreat review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 7 October 2014 10:48 (A review of Silent Retreat)I remember seeing the trailer for this awhile back and was pleasantly intrigued. The concept looked interesting enough so I had to see how everything played out. I would hate the rules of such a place. You pretty much cannot do anything which sounds way worse than going to prison. The acting is actually pretty decent and it helps that the girls are attractive. I wish since it's a small cast that we could have got more from everyone than we did. It's a slow burner that has a mystery tone to it for the most part. The twist is interesting although a bit disturbed. The last 30 mins is when it finally shows that it's in fact a horror movie. The rest of it just felt like a dramatic suspense thriller with horror elements. The creature is pretty interesting looking. The ending was okay. It was kind of a boring movie, but it isn't the worst thing I've seen. It's definitely a weird one.

Horns review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 6 October 2014 12:01 (A review of Horns)I just got done watching A Good Marriage and felt the next stop should be with Stephen King's son Joe Hill's first film adaptation. I have been wanting to see this for awhile and I'm excited to see how his storytelling compares to his father. Alexandre Aja directs this which is a good sign as he did three movies I enjoyed quite well (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes remake, and Mirrors). It also helps that he got a hold of some pretty good actors. I think Juno Temple must love showing off her body as pretty much every movie I see of her she at some point shows her birthday suit. Either that or she is a nudist who has to wear clothes just for most of the movie time haha. Okay this is very intriguing and it's very original. I love the concept of this and I'm glad I didn't actually know anything about the story before I watched it. You can tell that Joe Hill takes after his father as there are plenty of elements in this that remind me of Stephen King stories. Daniel Radcliffe proves he has some excellent acting chops as well as good skill with American English. The comedy is dark and enjoyable. There are a few uncomfortable and unexpected things, but it doesn't take away from the pure entertainment. I find it kind of funny that although Daniel Radcliffe has tried to stray far from Harry Potter his love interest still has red hair. Also the fact that snakes show up several times reminds me of Harry Potter as well. It's interesting to see all the different reactions that come from people close to Ig that see his horns. The acting is amazing and I think the actors fit their roles perfectly. There were some pretty good twists throughout. I have to say this is one of the best movies I have seen all year. It's visually stunning and the make-up is amazing. The ending was intense and showed some pretty nifty stuff. This is a definite must see.

A Good Marriage review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 4 October 2014 03:39 (A review of A Good Marriage)I love me some Stephen King so I'm happy to see another of his stories on the silver screen! Joan Allen looks like a grandmother now, but she still looks quite ravishing. I think it would be a tough situation to deal with if after 25 years you found out the love of your life is a serial killer. There is no really big twists as we already know what the story is about. However, there are some details in the story that are unexpected. It's interesting to see how everything plays out. The acting is really great more so from Stephen Lang and Joan Allen.
There was a bit of controversy with this film because of it's inspiration. Stephen King used similarities with the BTK killer. So the daughter of the killer lashed out saying that Stephen King was trying to make cash and glorify her father with this film. However, upon actually seeing this film for myself I'm sure that the daughter was overreacting. The killer in this is a pathetic loser of a man who deserves no praise except that the actor does such a great job at being decidedly creepy. The wife however is a strong and brilliant character. I think if the BTK killer's daughter actually watched the movie she might actually enjoy it. Sometimes people are rash about things simply for content without even knowing the full of it.
It's an intense and somewhat disturbing thriller, but it by no means makes you enjoy or cheer for the killer. As usual Stephen King is a genius even when he does something more slow burning than usual. It's a good and interesting watch, but it doesn't have any major twists like you would expect. Anyways this would be a good addition to any Stephen King fans.

ABCs of Death 2 review
Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 3 October 2014 08:38 (A review of ABCs of Death 2)So I wasn't too fond of the first ABCs movie as many of the shorts were horrible and ridiculous, but I am giving this one a chance because it's pretty much a new slate. It has several new directors some of which I've heard of and some of which I haven't. The beginning credits are disturbing but pretty creative.
"A is for Amateur" by E. L. Katz
I liked the way this one was filmed. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. Of course this one gets bonus points for having some hotties in it. The end has a nice twist to it. This sequel is off to a good start. The director of this also did Cheap Thrills which actually makes a lot of since. Hopefully he keeps up the good work.
7.4/10
"B is for Badger" by Julian Barratt
This one is more of a dark comedy. The acting is decent, but the characters of course are ignorant. That being said this one is actually kind of funny. It's a pretty straightforward segment so there isn't much else to say. This guy is an actor who has promise as a director. I say keep an eye out for him.
7.2/10
"C is for Capital Punishment" by Julian Gilbey
The acting in this one is great. The story itself is pretty disturbing and intense. It definitely puts you on the edge of your seat. This shows just how sick mankind can be sometimes when especially when people try to take matters into their own hands. It's actually kind of sad what happens. The director of this also did a recent film called "Plastic" and "A Lonely Place to Die" both of watch I have planned to see. So far this was definitely one of the better segments. I wonder how the characters felt after the credits rolled.
8.4/10
"D is for Deloused" by Robert Morgan
Okay I didn't like this one at all. The animation was awkward and the character designs were ugly. I couldn't tell if they were supposed to be human or what. This one made no sense and was pretty boring. There wasn't anything in this segment that I enjoyed. I say if you are going to watch this just skip this one.
0/10
"E is for Equilibrium" by Alejandro Brugues
This one was okay. I liked the Castaway movie reference. Boy things escalated rather quickly. This is another one that is more of dark comedy. The twist was unexpected and sudden. The ending will probably make you chuckle.
6/10
"F is for Falling" by Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado
The acting in this one is good. I have to say that there was a bit of an unexpected twist at the end. It's good to see that even though people can be cruel to you it doesn't mean you have to return the cruelty. The fact that this little short sort of gives a message about mankind makes it more interesting. I actually felt bad at the end.
7.2/10
"G is for Grandad" by Jim Hosking
The grandson is a very unlikeable character. The grandfather is really disturbing and creepy. The ending was very unexpected and unnecessary. I guess that they got a few directors in here who enjoyed the obscenities of the first one. Anyways for the most part I thought despite the strange ending that it was an okay story. Young people just don't have much respect for history and the elderly these days.
4/10
"H is for Head Games" by Bill Plympton
When this segment first started I knew immediately who the director was. This segment is completely surreal and makes absolutely no sense. I have no idea what the hell I just watched. The animation is pencil drawn and highly unusual. Things escalated rather quickly and that's all I know. Bill Plympton is one crazy guy that's for sure.
1/10
"I is for Invincible" by Erik Matti
When it first started I thought this one was going to be called Inheritance. Anyways it was a little gross, but entertainment wise it could use some work. I think some rich people do thing about this kind of disturbing stuff. Well at least the over-privileged and disturbed rich in the world.
2/10
"J is for Jesus" by Dennison Ramalho
I didn't expect this one to go the way it did. I do find it interesting what they dealt with content wise. As many religious people think that such things are caused by demons and the Devil. I thought the ending was really well done. The make up effects were pretty good. It's a decent segment.
6.8/10
"K is for Knell" by Kristina Buozyte & Bruno Samper
The CGI for this one was pretty good. I'm not sure what exactly was going on, but I thought the beginning was pretty good. It was disturbing in a good way. It ended differently than expected, but it was an interesting watch for sure. I mean it kept my attention from start to finish.
7/10
"L is for Legacy" by Lancelot Imasuen
This one was pretty low budget. I don't know where it was supposed to be taking place, but that didn't much matter to the story. That being said it was pretty decent although the ending was kind of poor.
6/10
"M is for Masticate" by Robert Boocheck
It was hilarious and sick at the same time. The fact that there was a pee stain on the guys underwear shows that the director wanted there to be attention to detail. I love the reveal of what happened to cause the events of this short. It's absurd, wild, and it's entertaining. The music that goes along with this is great. For a first time director this was a great entry.
8.7/10
"N is for Nexus" by Larry Fessenden
The director of this one is probably more well known for acting, but this isn't his first directing rodeo. It starts out with some boobs probably to get your attention. It works. Then things get interesting as things get closer to the end. You know what's coming, but you don't know when or how. When it does happen it's tragic and brutal. It's a very good albeit simple segment.
8.2/10
"O is for Ochlocracy (Mob Rule)" by Hajime Ohata
I love zombie stories especially when they bring some originality into the mix. It's also foreign which gives it more of an edge. It's funny and interesting. The ending leaves you to your own imagination. I tend to enjoy foreign horror more than American and this didn't disappoint. I think this should be fleshed out into a full film of its own.
8.5/10
"P is for P-P-P-P Scary" by Todd Rohal
It starts off seeming like an old 40s style slapstick kind of movie. Then it gets strange. It makes absolute no sense and it's pretty disturbing. What was with the weird make-up effects anyways? It was far from scary. The name for the segment is just plain stupid, but it kind of makes since when you watch it. That is if you actually watch this poor segment. It started off good, but the end result was pathetic.
1/10
"Q is for Questionnaire" by Rodney Ascher
I was wondering what the twist to this would be and I was pleasantly surprised. It hadn't been what I expected at first. In fact I don't think I could have seen that coming. The questions were interesting and I'm not sure I could have answered those as quickly as he did or even if I could get them all correct. For that I am grateful. This is also from the director of "Room 237" which I want to see. It helps to see that he can get you into a story rather quickly.
8.8/10
"R is for Roulette" by Marvin Kren
Wow that was quite the short. It's intense and the build up is perfect. It had me biting my nails sitting on the edge of my seat. I didn't expect it to end the way it did. I believe I can guess to what the ending didn't show, but then again it would just be a theory. Marvin Kren is a great director as seen with his previous films "Rammbock" and "Blood Glacier". Anyways that is how you make a short film interesting to watch.
10/10
"S is for Split" by Juan Martinez Moreno
The acting is really good. The twist was shocking and extremely unexpected. The build up is intense and the end results are spectacular. I didn't see that ending coming. It's brutal and disturbing yet somewhat tasteful. It's a pretty sad segment. Sometimes it's better not to take the risk.
10/10
"T is for Torture Porn" by Jen and Sylvia Soska
Um well that was awkward and disturbing. It definitely brings new meaning to torture porn that's for sure. The acting was a little mediocre. Not sure what the heck happened near the end, but those guys deserved what they had coming. That girl was beautiful though. I'm not entirely sure what I thought about it though to be honest. I'm waiting patiently for the Soska sisters' See No Evil 2 though. It's weird, but I guess watchable.
5.2/10
"U is for Utopia" by Vincenzo Natali
Well that was different and messed up. I'm pretty sure that most people wouldn't want that kind of Utopia. You should be accepted not by how you look, but by how you treat others. This was a good one. I could see it being a fuller story with like a rebellion or something. After "Cube" and "Splice" this proves Vincenzo Natali is a director to watch and enjoy.
8.3/10
"V is for Vacation" by Jerome Sable
Well that sure escalated quickly. I didn't see that ending the way it did, but I guess the way it was going it should have been expected. I was wondering when there would be a found footage segment. That was brutal and intense. Dylan is the kind of friend you don't want to have. The director of this also did "Stage Fright" this year that I thought was pretty good.
9/10
"W is for Wish" by Steven Kostanski
It starts off like a commercial for kids toys and quickly escalates to something completely disturbing and original. It's like a kids show remade for adult horror/science fiction fans. It's gory and brutal which is just wicked awesome. That ending was disturbing yet in a sick way kind of comical. Some things shouldn't be wished for! Anyways from the other works of this guy I could tell this is his style as he does extreme grindhouse style films. It's definitely a great albeit disturbing segment.
8.7/10
"X is for Xylophone" by Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo
Well kids can sure be an annoying handful sometimes. I found it interesting that once the little girl got more into the she got louder and eventually overpowered the beautiful music playing during the scene. I don't know how that near the end could have possibly happened, but I'm glad it wasn't shown it makes it all the more sick and disturbing. It's quite a unique story that's for sure.
8.3/10
"Y is for Youth" by Soichi Umezawa
Well that was definitely Japanese for sure. That girl had quite the imagination and even though it was odd it actually made sense. Most of the time you can't make since of Japanese craziness so to be able to understand is quite refreshing. It was definitely creative and unique. It was also kind of sad in some ways.
7.4/10
"Z is for Zygote" by Chris Nash
That has got to be one of the most disturbing and disgusting things I have ever seen. That being said it was at least original. How can you leave someone for 13 years and just come home like nothing happened? I wonder what to make of that ending. It's a very strange one indeed.
5/10
"To all the haters online...we fucking love you." That was at the end of the credits and I have to say that makes me enjoy their insanity all the more. Yes some of these are godawful shitstorms, but this was way better than the first one. Oh and there is an awkward little scene after the credits. It's up to you if you want to watch it. The worst segment is "D is for Deloused" leaving the best at a tie between "R is for Roulette" and "S is for Split".
I give this and overall rating of 6.5/10 which is way better than the original did.
"A is for Amateur" by E. L. Katz
