Sex Tape review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 3 October 2014 02:57 (A review of Sex Tape)I have been wanting to see this for awhile mostly because I think Jason Segel is hilarious. I'm not too much a fan of Cameron Diaz though as I find her kind of annoying. Anyways I thought the premise was hilarious and looked like it could be a fun watch. There were some scenes here and there that were somewhat funny. Seeing Jason Segel naked is still weird and uncomfortable though. Cameron Diaz isn't much for showing herself so I wonder if the scenes showing her butt are really her butt or if it's a body double. This kind of reminds me of the recent trouble some celebrities had recently of their private pictures being sent out to the world. Some things were left unanswered which is probably okay for most people. It was actually pretty boring except for a few scenes. I think I laughed out loud only once or twice. It's just not a good movie.

A Walk Among the Tombstones review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 3 October 2014 02:08 (A review of A Walk Among the Tombstones)Liam Neeson is a great actor and even in his older age he is quite amazing as an action hero. I only recently heard of this, but decided very quickly that this was something I should check out. It doesn't have many well known actors other than Liam Neeson though, but I don't think that will bother anyone. There are some pretty gritty and intense scenes that were awesome. At times this is a bit disturbing given the content it deals with. I think other than the main character TJ was the only other likeable character. I find it funny how teenagers always look up to badasses who work alone and try to be their partners. There were some moments that I really didn't see coming which was good to see. The ending itself was shocking and thrilling. I guess it's good I watched this in October because it does sort of have elements of horror to it. It was definitely a great way to start October. It's a must see for any Neeson fan in my opinion.

Howard the Duck review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 1 October 2014 10:34 (A review of Howard the Duck)I figured that it was finally time to check this out after several years of hearing how ridiculous and nonsensical it is. It has a few surprising cast members that I didn't know about and some I did. The pop culture references replaced with the ducks was cheesy, but I think for the time was actually kind of fun. The acting is over the top which with a movie about a humanoid duck it should be expected. The fight scenes were definitely of the 80s slapstick type. It had it's cute and funny moments though. I have to say Lea Thompson is the best thing about this. I'm sure if I was born in the 70s she would have definitely been one of my crushes. On an unrelated not she is still pretty attractive. The villain kind of reminded me of the look and feel of the villain from Men in Black. Anyways it isn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but it isn't a particularly good film. It's an oddball for sure. If you are a connoisseur of bad 80s movies this is right up that alley. I think if they remake it with the CGI available and a better storyline that would be much better.

The Punisher review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 28 September 2014 04:39 (A review of The Punisher)I liked the recent Punisher movies. I liked War Zone for it's extreme violence and I liked the Thomas Jane version for the character himself. Now I am curious and decided to check out the original Dolph Lundgren version. I see that this is noted as Brendan Gleeson's very first time on-screen so that's pretty cool. Although his part is small and probably goes unnoticed if you aren't looking for or expecting him. So the fact that he doesn't have his trademark skull shirt kind of makes this just another random revenge story rather than a Punisher story. The action is pretty good for 1989. Some of the script is actually decent and I saw some things I haven't seen before which is good. The back story was probably the weakest out of all 3 Punisher movies. I liked the sidekick guy and thought he was kind of funny. Why did Frank Castle look so sickly though? Was that their way of showing the skull was with Dolph Lundgren's makeup? Anyways it was a decent action flick.

White Bird in a Blizzard review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 27 September 2014 04:04 (A review of White Bird in a Blizzard)I saw the trailer for this and it looked pretty interesting. It's good to see Thomas Jane returning to acting again. The acting is great and the story is intriguing. It was a good mystery and it kept you hooked to find out what really happened. I do think at times it dragged a bit. The end was twisted and didn't go the way I was expecting. It was pretty interesting watch and kind of felt like a different style to the typical coming of age story. This is from the director of things like Mysterious Skin and Kaboom so it was bound to be a little disturbing and uncomfortable. It's worth a watch.

Not Cool review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 26 September 2014 08:03 (A review of Not Cool)When the biggest stars you have are a wrestler and a Youtube star you must expect the worst. The only thing worse than that is the Youtuber being the director as well. I watched the trailer for this and Shane Dawson trying to play a romantic lead in a dramedy is an awful idea. Anyways I decided to check this out to see just how horrible it is and to warn those if it is as awful as it looks. At times it's a little funny and other times it's just really awkward. It's definitely highly inappropriate and full of gross out humor, but if you are familiar with Shane Dawson that shouldn't be surprising. The weird friend Joel makes me uncomfortable every time he is on-screen. I have to say the girls in this are quite attractive. I wonder what it is about low budget movies that attract good looking women. The parts with Aunt Flo and the one with the Watermelon were my favorite parts. Of course Degrassi is mentioned as it was parodied by Shane multiple times. I'm sure this will hit with his regular audience, but for most other people this will probably be a load of crap. That being said I actually thought the ending was adorable and well done. It's a cute story, but most of it was ridiculous and over the top. It could have been much better without the unnecessary gross body humor.

22 Jump Street review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 26 September 2014 03:50 (A review of 22 Jump Street)I didn't care for the first film that much, but it had it's special moments. Hopefully this one is better as I like the directors animated films. The one thing I didn't like about the first one and I'm sure I will not like about this one is Jonah Hill. He just isn't funny to me or even remotely interesting. Anyways I decided to give this one a shot despite everything. It has some great A-list cameos. This one actually has many laugh out loud moments even from Jonah Hill. I think it's funny the way they talk about their own police department with words that pretty much describe the movies. They give us a previously on such and such to kind of give the feeling of the television series this is based off of. In fact the make several jokes about their other works and such (you will catch them if you know their movies) which I always find amusing in comedies. The end credits has to be probably the best part of the whole movie though. I actually enjoyed this much more than the first one. Some great plot twists and turns. The fight scenes were hilarious and silly. Sometimes sequels can be better. I see Jonah Hill is finally growing on me. Still found him most of the time a bit annoying. Anyways it's worth checking out. It was really fun.

Suicide Club review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 26 September 2014 03:37 (A review of Suicide Club)I can always depend on Japan for an interesting and disturbing storyline. I have known about this movie for awhile and decided to finally check it out for myself. The disturbing thing isn't the mass suicides but the joyful music that joins them. This movie proves how crazy and messed up humanity can be. There is more to this movie than just people killing themselves. That alone makes this so captivating. The death scenes are disturbing, intense, and at times completely unexpected. I don't get the point of the musical number other than for the actor (who is actually a singer) to do what he is known for. I had a feeling what the big twist was, but the way it was revealed was well done. There are a few scenes that I didn't see coming. It's a really strange film that doesn't really make a lot of sense. The ending was a little odd. It's definitely not something for weak stomachs. I can't say I would recommend this one. As most Japanese films this one doesn't make much sense.

The Sacrament review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 20 September 2014 11:53 (A review of The Sacrament)I enjoy Ti West and think he is an underrated horror director. It seems that the main cast all worked together before with each other and with Ti West. It's funny that this is a movie about cults and I'm pretty sure this will only get a cult following and live under the radar. The tone of the film is creepy and for the majority of the film nothing too interesting really happens to be honest. Who would have thought "Fix Me Jesus" could give off an uncomfortable vibe. Things elevate rather slowly, but once the juicy bit starts it gets kind of brutal and intense. It's a pretty interesting watch and doesn't fit Ti West's normal kind of filmmaking. It could have been much better if it was a fuller movie and tried to captivate from the beginning. Most of the characters had no development and it felt like they were just there to be a body count. Yes the sense of dread and uncomfortableness rises through the film, but most people who would view this will find it exhausting waiting for the pay off.

The Scribbler review
Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 20 September 2014 04:47 (A review of The Scribbler)The cast is definitely a unique selection. In fact the whole main cast are familiar faces and well known names. So I decided to check this out and see what it had to offer. I noticed that the director also did a movie I quite enjoyed called Breathing Room which gives me hope for this. If you didn't know Katie Cassidy was in this you might not recognize her or at least I wouldn't have. There is a plethora of unusual and intriguing characters. The story itself was way better than I was thinking it would be. I think near the end it kind of felt like a comic book kind of film. I hope this gets some good attention because it's a fascinating watch full of twists and turns. The ending was excellent. I need more. I could see them making another one. Check it out if you want something different to watch.
