Serena review

Posted : 10 years ago on 22 November 2014 09:36 (A review of Serena)

The premise of this is decent, but what makes this exciting is the actors. I love me some Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. The chemistry between them is just impeccable. The acting and characters are really interesting. So this is a movie about The Depression and it's even got some other depressing elements to it. At times this drama feels a bit like a thriller as well. The acting is really good of course. There are some scenes here and there that will catch you off guard. This was a pretty interesting watch and not what I was expecting at all. It starts off as one genre and slowly slips into another genre's shoes. It's definitely worth checking out.

Miss Meadows review

Posted : 10 years ago on 22 November 2014 03:48 (A review of Miss Meadows)

I have to admit I'm not to big a fan of Katie Holmes, but the premise for this looked somewhat intriguing. Miss Meadows is a very interesting character and quite different from the usual Katie Holmes annoying typecast. That has to be quite an awkward little sex scene for many different reasons which you will understand if you watch this. The way she talks and dresses is very Mary Poppins. The chemistry between Miss Meadows and the Sheriff was great although quite strange. I do wish there was a little bit more vigilantism going on. I liked the twists and thought they were incorporated well into the story. There was one scene that might be quite uncomfortable for people although it's quite brief and it's more implied than shown. I thought this was a unique and interesting watch.

As Above, So Below review

Posted : 10 years ago on 19 November 2014 05:11 (A review of As Above, So Below)

I remembering hearing a lot about this and wanting to see it for awhile now. It's directed by John Erick Dowdle who directed Quarantine and Devil. Both of watch I really enjoyed. The atmosphere here is extremely creepy which isn't an easy thing to make me feel when watch scary movies. It takes awhile for people to start getting killed off, but it's still quite intriguing throughout the entire thing. It wasn't what I was expecting it to be, but it wasn't bad. There were some good moments one of which had to do with a car on fire. It keeps your attention and has a little bit of originality. Not a bad watch, but only worth a one time watch.

The Theory of Everything review

Posted : 10 years ago on 19 November 2014 02:33 (A review of The Theory of Everything)

I loved the trailer and wanted to see this immediately. It's interesting to see more of the side of Stephen Hawking that we don't really know. We all or most of us anyways are aware of the science involved with Stephen King, but learning about who he was as a person was really interesting. It's nice to know that through the struggles of ALS he could find great humor in life still. The acting was amazing especially from Eddie Redmayne. I think he put on an extremely Oscar worthy performance. Nice to see Harry Lloyd playing someone who isn't evil like he did in Game of Thrones. It's emotional and bittersweet. It does make you think about life and should even inspire people to do better. I think this was very amazing and well done. It is a gripping eye opener that I think everyone should see. It is so worth it.

Fury review

Posted : 10 years ago on 19 November 2014 02:08 (A review of Fury)

I wanted to see this since before the trailer was out and just the name and the cast were online. David Ayer is one director I just highly enjoy. When it comes to brutal stories he doesn't let it go easy. The dialogue was good, but the execution from the cast made it way better. One particular line stood out for me because I think it defines what happens in this movie. "Ideals are peaceful. History is violent." The cast did an incredible job. I did think Jon Bernthal was like a war damaged Shane though. There is a lot of stuff I haven't ever seen done in a war movie before that made this above much of the rest. It's brutal. It's intense. At times it's even quite a bit gory. If you have a weak stomach this movie will not be for you. Even when it's not dealing with violence it still makes you uneasy and nervous. Fury itself is definitely a character of it's own and I think that's how the audience should feel about it. This may be a violent heavy film, but I do think it was character driven as well. I would definitely watch this again.

August: Osage County review

Posted : 10 years ago on 18 November 2014 04:16 (A review of August: Osage County)

I have to say I honestly didn't know anything about this movie before seeing it out on DVD. It has an amazing cast and the premise seems interesting. I always like a good dysfunctional family movie so I decided to check it out. The acting is quite amazing and it's interesting to see Ewan McGregor and Benedict Cumberbatch show how well they can portray American characters. There are some great moments of dialogue that were executed in great ways. I loved seeing Julia Roberts play against type for once. There are some truly emotional and powerful scenes throughout that make you think about life and family. There are some pretty interesting twists and turns for this drama that I didn't see coming. I liked this, but I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. It's definitely very interesting and well made though.

Dear White People review

Posted : 10 years ago on 16 November 2014 01:56 (A review of Dear White People)

I remember seeing the trailer for this and knowing that this was definitely something I wanted to see. The cast is amazing and the characters are extraordinary. It's good to see that not all of the characters are exactly as their first impression gives. We have a little bit of everything here. It's satirical and has some laugh out loud moments. It's a refreshing way to look at a serious subject. Of course at times you have to expect there to boundaries that are pushed to a certain extent. It's educational, but in a very entertaining way. I love all the references to pop culture and how it's viewed. There is also a lot here I realize that I have seen countless times among friends and to be honest even myself. We should love who we are and who others are, but I think we need to be ourselves nonetheless. So it isn't just about race, but it also has a bit of self-discovery added into it. I think this is definitely a must see for everyone as I'm sure everyone can learn something from this. I really enjoyed this.

The Babadook review

Posted : 10 years ago on 14 November 2014 05:58 (A review of The Babadook)

I remember seeing the trailer for this and it looked interesting enough. However it didn't seem like something I would rush to see or hype about. Now I have been hearing a lot about it and so I decided to see for myself what this movie had to offer. It starts off pretty interestingly. I never thought about what my parents were dreaming about when I was a kid waking them up in the middle of the night whenever I couldn't sleep. It's interesting to see the strange relationship between the mother and son unfold. There is a lot of different ways to interpret what is going on between them. Some of those ways make a lot of sense while others are just rubbish. It's definitely uncomfortable when certain things happen though. That is one crazy and disturbed young boy. I don't know how I could deal with someone who acted the way he does. I thought this was very original and creepy. The Babadook itself kind of reminded me a little bit of Freddy Krueger except not so much with humor. This feels a lot like a fairytale that has gone horribly horribly wrong. It seemed like as the story went on the sanity of Amelia begins to go downhill and Samuels' sanity makes more sense. It is nice to see that a scary movie can rely on it's atmospheric attitude rather than constant jump scares. The ending was a bit odd, but overall this was very interesting to watch. I think it's not your typical kind of horror. The ending kind of made me think of Mama except done in a much better and different kind of way. I think it's good for a one time watch.

Crows Explode review

Posted : 10 years ago on 10 November 2014 04:02 (A review of Crows Explode)

So I loved the first 2 Crows Zero films the second of which is my favorite so far. Takashi Miike doesn't return to direct this third installment unfortunately, but that isn't necessarily unexpected. Toshiaki Toyoda has some big shoes to fill. It's good to see that a few characters have stuck around after 5 years. The cast doesn't bother me though as I am hoping it has the kind of intense story like it's predecessors. The action is brutal and intense as I expected it to be. The characters are interesting and unique. You can always expect to see a huge battle in the end of each of these movies. That is honestly the best thing about these movies. There is a little humor here and there like the bathhouse scene with the Yakuza members. The dialogue is a bit cheesy at times, but the acting makes up for it completely. Rindaman is so epic that we are never allowed to see how the fight progresses. I'm hoping to see some more of the Crows series in the future and Toshiaki Toyoda did this story justice.

Sex Ed (2014) review

Posted : 10 years ago on 9 November 2014 09:36 (A review of Sex Ed (2014))

It's nice to see Haley Joel Osment in a lead role again. I have to admit he has aged oddly. For a movie called Sex Ed you would have to expect a lot of innuendos and such. His situations before becoming the teacher are all about sexual stuff so it foreshadows the obvious of what is to come. Also the music makes it feel like something from the 70s. I always like these kind of movies where a class of underdogs has to learn their way. This is actually a really nice story with a lot of heart mixed into the sexual humor. The characters themselves are quite interesting and wonderful. I thought the ending was pretty hilarious. It wasn't how I expected it to be, but it was definitely worth the watch. I have a feeling this will be underrated.
