Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 23 January 2015 11:07 (A review of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day)I remember reading this book when I was much younger so I was actually excited to check this one out. Plus Steve Carell is awesome so that also got me enthusiastic. There were quite a few moments that I felt were more inappropriate than necessary, but it didn't take away from the movie. It's a fun and funny movie for the whole family, but I honestly wouldn't let kids under 13 watch alone. The acting was pretty good and the characters were interesting. The little baby seems to have a knack for eating things as he/she also starred in Neighbors where bad stuff was eaten. This has some good lessons to teach. It was definitely worth it for me.

The Best of Me review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 23 January 2015 08:11 (A review of The Best of Me)Okay I'm not going to lie. I actually really enjoy these Nicholas Sparks movies and I'm not afraid to admit it. It doesn't mean anything. I just enjoy an interesting yet tragic story of loss and romance. Besides this one has some pretty great seasoned actors. I'm a little confused by the fact that he survived not only the blast from the explosion, but apparently he also survived for four hours in the water. Was he still conscious? Was he above the water because from what we saw he went below the surface? If he did go underwater how did he not drown after 4 hours of having water in his lungs which I'm sure cannot be changed at that point? Is Luke Bracey supposed to be young college age guy or what because he looks about 30 years old here. At least it is acknowledged how odd it is that he survived in the water for so long. Despite the cheesiness, plot holes, and predictable ending I did find myself enjoying this one. I think the acting was pretty good. The chemistry between the younger versions was much fuller and better than when they meet again as adults. Dawson's father looked like he thought he was in the old west which was kind of funny. I think it was a bit rushed in some parts. Anyways it could have been better, but it was still watchable.

Whiplash review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 18 January 2015 07:37 (A review of Whiplash)I don't know why I haven't seen this yet as I enjoy Miles Teller quite a bit. I've been hearing nothing but good things about it. Damien Chazelle is definitely an example of making hit or misses. Seeing as he directed this, but wrote the horrible sequel to The Last Exorcism. The acting here is pretty amazing. J.K. Simmons is one of the most intense instructors I have ever seen portrayed on screen. Miles Teller put a lot of blood sweat and tears into his performance. So it's a little disappointing that he wasn't at least nominated for his performance here. It somewhat reminded me of myself although I'm not musically inclined. I knew what Fletcher was doing although some instructors like that take things way too far. I don't think it's right at all to pretty much bully someones potential out to be honest though. Some people aren't as tough as our main character and would crumble apart like a character that is mentioned here. It has so much ferocious intensity and emotional scenes throughout. There are a few things I would have like to have seen at the end, but it still works amazingly the way it ended. When it was over I felt so emotionally exhausted in the best possible meaning. If you haven't seen this yet then you should definitely change that. Honestly this is a masterpiece of cinematic art. It's no wonder that this is a full length version of a short film by the same director.

John Wick review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 17 January 2015 06:02 (A review of John Wick)When I saw the premise for this I actually wanted to see it. A movie centered on a man who is taking revenge on those who killed his dog. Nobody likes seeing the dog die in movies so it's always more comforting seeing the antagonists biting the dust for their evil deeds. Of course this will have many cliches as it's a Keanu Reeves driven action thriller. What else would you expect? The directors here have been in a few action films, but this is the first time directing for both of them. The gunplay in this is freaking badass and intense. It's interesting to see a little bit of fighting/martial arts mixed in with shooting makes for something quite unique and fun. I have to say this is by far one of Keanu Reeves best characters. Wow Theon Greyjoy was such a douchebag here. This is such a dude movie. I loved it from beginning to end. I was truly impressed by this one. Yes it's cliche and cheesy, but it's got a cute little storyline wrapped with a ton of brutal violence. If you love action and Keanu Reeves I highly recommend checking this one out.

Preservation review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 16 January 2015 08:13 (A review of Preservation)I saw the trailer for this and I was pleasantly intrigued. It is one of those trailers where it doesn't actually spoil the whole story unlike most recent trailers. This has a lot of resemblance to Eden Lake although the killers aren't seen before the killing starts. Also Eden Lake only had two main characters. The brother is awesome, but the husband is really lame and unlikeable. Things didn't go as I would have liked, but I think this was actually quite well done. I don't think I have seen many port-a-potty fights before this if any. I think this is a very interesting look at the violence in society and how it affects our youth and their futures. This does have some flaws like normal people getting beaten pretty bad with seemingly no affect. Also of course we have our cliched moments where the characters have to do something stupid so we get some death scenes. I did think it was different and unique how they portrayed the villains who you never hear talk and barely even see their faces. The ending was alright. All in all this movie was pretty entertaining even with its flaws.

Cake review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 14 January 2015 03:16 (A review of Cake)I have to admit I didn't know much of anything about this story before checking it out. All I knew is that Jennifer Aniston went without make up for the role. I find her to be quite beautiful now rather than when she was young. Indeed she is still quite gorgeous to look at without makeup in my opinion. This is by far her best role and it seems to be extremely against type. The real scene stealer though is Adriana Barraza. There are few quite recognizable faces and names here some of which have surprisingly small amounts of screen time. It does drag on a little bit though. I kept sitting and wondering why the hell it was titled Cake until closer to the end. I thought the ending was a nice icing to the cake that is the film. There were several well done scenes that I really enjoyed throughout. I think it's worth checking out particularly if you are a big Jennifer Aniston fan.

A Most Violent Year review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 13 January 2015 05:12 (A review of A Most Violent Year)The premise for this caught my attention as well as the amazing cast. The acting is quite remarkable specifically from our two mains of course. This does have some violence in it, but given the title of the film you expect more than is given. There are several moments that happen off-screen and are talked about throughout the film though. Also a few things that don't pertain to the story are mentioned in passing on the radio and such. There were a few moments that were pretty awesome though and well put together. I did think all the truck stealing stuff was an interesting idea. It's an interesting idea to make a gangster type of movie where someone is on the same level as one but tries not to be one. I think my expectations might have been a little too high. I think it could have been a little better to be honest. It was a good film, but it wasn't phenomenal. Give it a shot you may like it.

Kill the Messenger review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 12 January 2015 01:18 (A review of Kill the Messenger)I have to say until watching this I don't recall seeing anything about it. Although I should have seeing as I find Jeremy Renner a remarkable actor. Oh Ray Liotta is in here too. Not too sure that it's a good thing, but he isn't always in stinkers. Also Richard Schiff and Michael K. Williams in another crime related film I decided to check out back to back. In fact this is the 3rd film just this month I've seen with Michael K. Williams. What a busy guy! This may not be the kind of movie everyone will like, but it's definitely quite informative if you know nothing about the story. A few big names here that have quite small roles with some that are pivotal. The ending makes me think of all the Illuminati stuff going on. I thought this movie was intelligent and thought provoking. I don't think it was as gripping as it should have been giving the content of the story. I feel that there were parts missing here and there. Not sure if it was intentional or if the editing was a bit off. I think with a better crew this would have been quite a watch. I say it's a one time watch only just for Jeremy Renner and to learn a little important history of our civilization.

The Gambler review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 11 January 2015 04:25 (A review of The Gambler)I usually enjoy Mark Wahlberg movies so when I saw this was coming out I knew I would be checking it out. I had no idea this was a remake however. This was directed by the guy who did Rise of the Planet of the Apes which I think is interesting since Mark Wahlberg was the star of the previous remake of Planet of the Apes. The music and the atmosphere of the movie actually kind of feels like it takes place in the 70s of which the original was made in. The acting is amazing. The story itself is pretty depressing. I think the whole thing was pretty remarkable especially the ending. Nobody likes to admit they have a problem and I thought this captured that and a lot of other emotions and issues quite well. I have been liking most of the movies that are up for awards and this one doesn't change that. I thought it was quite realistic in it's depiction of such a bad addiction. I highly recommend this to Mark Wahlberg fans. Hell maybe it may get non-fans to enjoy him in this as well.

Big Hero 6 review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 10 January 2015 06:45 (A review of Big Hero 6)I have been wanting to see this one forever and finally got the chance. It looked hilarious and awesome at the same time so I knew I had to check it out. It's interesting and different to see Disney take on a Marvel story. This was directed by the guy who wrote "Mulan" and the guy who wrote "Princess and the Frog" and "Tarzan". Well I think Disney should do a lot more Marvel stories like this. As we all know both deal with the death of loved ones as a drive for the story and the main characters passion. I have to say this was extremely amazing and badass. I thought it was quite hilarious although had some really sad points a few times. The animation was great and quite beautiful to look at. The characters were pretty awesome because they weren't the typical superheroes like Fred in particular. The villain was also quite interesting to look at. I have to say though obviously Baymax is the star of the show and is just absolutely amazing. He kind of reminds me of Drix from Osmosis Jones. Make sure to stay after the credits. Yes even this has one of those Marvel after credits moments. If you haven't seen this already I recommend getting on it. I seriously hope there will be more entries into this story.
