Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 10 January 2015 05:56 (A review of Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014))At first when I saw there was a trailer for this I actually thought it was a comic book movie about Birdman. Instead it's about a guy who played Birdman which actually intrigued me. I have been hearing tons of good things about this movie so I decided to go ahead and give in to the ravings. The only other movie I have seen from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was Babel so I have hopes that this will be a pretty good watch as people say. I love all the references they make to their real life counterparts as well as to big name celebrities. Everyone here puts on such stellar performances. Michael Keaton proves that he still has the range even though he has been away for awhile. I love that this feels like a theater production and seems like one single shot like you are actually watching the story unfold without a change of pace. It's definitely a different sort of film and nothing about this is run of the mill. It has a little bit of everything. It's quirky, dark, amusing, and just plain entertaining. I don't know why it took me so long to go ahead and see this, but it was well worth finally checking it out. I thought the ending was creative and gives the viewer their own decision to make. I think if you are looking for something innovative, intelligent, and fun I recommend giving this a shot.

The Imitation Game review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 9 January 2015 10:30 (A review of The Imitation Game)I have been interested since I saw the trailer for this. I think Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor. Here he leads an amazing cast of well known British actors. Alan Turing's behavior kind of reminds me of similarities with Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook. It seems a lot of people who are quite intelligent usually have problems socially as I've personally encountered. Although I'm far from treating people like worms I do get frustrated when people don't understand things that I think are simple. I had no idea homosexuality was against the law back in England in the 40s or before. You learn something new everyday. This was so smartly acted and the story is well edited and pulls together quite nicely. It's such a great film the more you think about everything involved. I recommend checking this out and learning a bit of important history albeit dramatized.

Inherent Vice (2014) review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 9 January 2015 03:09 (A review of Inherent Vice (2014))See I always confuse the Directors Paul Thomas Anderson, Paul W.S. Anderson, and Wes Anderson because they all have similar names. They are quite different filmmakers for sure though. I was curious about this one so I checked it out thanks to my awesome job at the local theater. This movie was pretty weird and at the same time hilarious and highly entertaining. The dialogue was pretty great as well as the interactions between the characters. There were tons of characters here although some were quite brief albeit pivotal the story. All of them were quite interesting and different. Some things don't make a lot of sense and get lost in translation like character motivations for example. I liked that there were some references to Warner Bros like characters and a few phrases. It's interesting how things seemingly unrelated are in some way connected. I don't really like Maya Rudolph at all so I am glad her role was limited to be frank. Katherine Waterston looks like she is in her 20s here, but she is actually in her mid 30s! Anyways I really loved it even though I will be checking it out a few more times and maybe get some things I didn't get the first time. I highly suggest giving this a check out.
SN: Joaquin Phoenix looked like drugged out version of Wolverine here haha.

Groundhog Day (1993) review
Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 6 January 2015 05:03 (A review of Groundhog Day (1993))I always hear people mentioning this movie and I just never got around to checking it out. I love these kinds of stories so I decided to go ahead and check out the most famous one. Ah this was back when Harold Ramis made the good stuff! It has some pretty great moments. I wonder how long he was in the time lapse. There is definitely a lot of stuff I would attempt if I were in his situation. It's more like a light hearted dark comedy. Some things here are quite sad and depressing. Andie MacDowell was a hot young thing and still is. It's cool to see Michael Shannon's beginning here. I do think it felt a little rushed at the end and there was really no explanation as to what caused it all. The only thing we know for sure is that he had to change his ways permanently like Scrooge or things just would never be happy for him. The only thing about watching this over and over is that you won't get different results like he did "Ding!". After 22 years this movie still is quite entertaining and in my opinion fun. I definitely recommend seeing this if you haven't already.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 4 January 2015 06:25 (A review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies)Okay so I had to finish of the series so I went to see this today. I didn't like the idea of splitting the short book into three whole movies that are close to about 3 hours each. I knew however that I would still being seeing them all anyways. This was pretty much a pure action story with little handfuls of story thrown into the mix. I appreciated that much though since the first 2 films pretty much took care of all the important bits of the story. So the acting here was decent, but the real bulk of interest here were the awesome battle sequences. Alfrid is pretty much this trilogy's Wormtongue although hilariously more awkward. There are quite of few humorous scenes throughout. There were a few creative moments such as when Bard improvises when his bow is broken. There are some pretty cool character cameos and mentions that fans will be sure to catch. There are some pretty crazy action sequences with some of the most interesting choreography I've seen in a Middle Earth movie. Some of it made me a little sad and the fact that it all ended is disappointing. There is still the Silmarillion that they could do although it would be a completely different cast probably. Anyways I think it was a good conclusion and widely entertaining. It sure is no masterpiece, but it is an adrenaline rush. This one ends to start a new beginning whereas Return of the King was the end of the story. I suggest going to see it to conclude the series fully.

American Sniper review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 4 January 2015 04:16 (A review of American Sniper)I definitely knew this was something I would be watching soon after it came out. Bradley Cooper is such an amazing well rounded actor. In fact everyone really pulls their own weight here no matter how small or pivotal their roles are. This was a brutal movie that goes deep into one world famous snipers mind. We see the trauma of war that messes with his psyche at home. There are moments where you aren't sure what will happen or maybe you just hope the outcome will not be what your expecting. It's a pretty gritty look at war violence and it's effect on those involved directly and indirectly. This did have a few humorous lines and scenes, but it's an otherwise very serious emotional movie. I think this movie really did justice for Chris Kyle. This was the first time a movie ended and I heard nothing but silence. There was no music and everyone was so speechless as they left. That's how you know you just watched a masterpiece when no one really knows what to say, but everyone knows it was amazing. I highly recommend everyone go see this. I think it captured everything so well. Clint Eastwood really outdid himself with this in my opinion. I won't be surprised if this gets a few Oscars.

City of God (2002) review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 3 January 2015 05:47 (A review of City of God (2002))Okay so I know I should have seen this as soon as I was old enough, but I just never got around to it until now. I love gang movies so I thought I should check this out finally. Also when they are based on true stories that intrigues me even more. To see how the world is around me or before my time had gone about things is rather compelling. I see a few of the actors in this also starred in Blindness which was also directed by Fernando Meirelles. I also like that the novelist who wrote the book this is based on has a cameo here.
Lil Ze has to be one of the craziest psychopaths in the world. I swear he is an incarnation of pure evil through his actions and attitude. It's quite interesting to see all the fundamentals of making a drug empire. To think that the acting is really good from all these young people in their first roles is quite amazing. One thing I have noticed is that most of the crimes in poverty stricken areas are caused by teens and children rather than adults. To think a lot of criminals in the world such as the ones depicted here are young or started off as teens and children is an intriguing nightmare of reality. It's all portrayed so well too. The violence here is graphic and intense and is displayed with relentless realism that you sometimes wonder if this is just a movie or a documentary.
I think the cinematography is stunning and different from many things. It really makes you feel like you are kind of there somehow. This movie is a very serious depiction of a chaotic drug lord's enterprise yet there was one scene I actually thought was kinda funny in a dark way. That ending was intense and brutal just like the rest of the movie. To think this was only a snippet of all the ruthlessness that goes on in that area is so eye opening. This was really well made and gripping. I couldn't turn away no matter how I felt about some of the things that happened. If you are a film connoisseur you have to include this in your film bucket list. I should have gotten to this much sooner, but it was still worth the wait. It seems that even after 13 years this film still fits well in our time.

The East review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 3 January 2015 01:07 (A review of The East)I have been wanting to see this since it came out, but I never had the opportunity until now. I think the cast is full of great actors and Billy Magnussen keeps popping up in the films I've been checking out lately including Into the Woods and Revenge of the Green Dragons. An interesting thing is that this about terrorists who are for the "greater good" and Aldis Hodge plays a member. In The Purge movies Edwin Hodge (Aldis's brother) plays a member of a "terrorist organization" as well for the "greater good". This movie is a prime example of just because people do bad things it doesn't mean they are bad people. I actually really liked all the characters here and thought they all contributed finely to the overall story. The acting was good as I expected. The issues faced here are real and sad. The ending was interesting, but I could see the twists coming a mile away. It's an entertaining and somewhat "educational" watch. I recommend checking it out and it might even change your views on things.

Revenge of the Green Dragons review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 2 January 2015 07:05 (A review of Revenge of the Green Dragons)I saw a poster for this and was drawn to it by the content and people involved. The director also did two films I had liked called The Storm Riders and Legend of the Fist. Both of which were awesome action flicks. I have to admit though when your biggest name is Ray Liotta you shouldn't be expecting much. It's interesting to see an American crime story from the views of a group other than the usual. The acting here is a bit iffy although it does have it's decent moments. Some of the actors try too hard and others not hard enough. The story itself is actually pretty interesting and keeps you on the edge. The action is one of the things that rises up and it's not even martial arts here which is a good change. It's interesting that most of the time gangs usually only decimate their own people rather than other races which is very interesting and disturbing. I have to say that ending really threw me off and made up for a lot of the movie. I didn't see that coming at all. This wasn't a masterpiece, but in the end even with it's many faults it was actually pretty captivating. To think that this was based on actual events is kind of terrifying and sad. I say give it a shot and watch it until the end.

Big Eyes review
Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 2 January 2015 02:09 (A review of Big Eyes)I have to say I really was interested in this for Christoph Waltz and to see how this followed the Tim Burton style of film-making. The acting was pretty good and it had some pretty great one liners. The costume design and the sets had the look and feel of a Tim Burton film. The only weirdness that made it feel like something Tim Burton did was when she saw other people with big eyes. The ending kind of seemed like either something I have seen before or I am somewhat familiar with the court case involved in the story. It's interesting to see Tim Burton work with a new slate of actors and he utilizes them quite well. Also the music is made by Danny Elfman as usual and it's still pretty good. Although it's not his best efforts. It's a truly intriguing story and I recommend checking it out.
