The Equalizer review

I love Denzel Washington movies so I was definitely going to see this at some point. Also the fact that he is working together with the same director of Training Day is awesome. Although I didn't know Antoine Fuqua made that horrible King Arthur movie from 2004. He still makes up for it with other really good films. This categorizes as one of those really good films. Denzel really holds it all together with excellent acting as well as Chloe Moretz. The action scenes are badass and he still proves he is not a guy you want to mess with. Robert McCall reminds me of a modern day Sherlock Holmes with a dash of Monk. I think though that this would have been an average run of the mill thriller if it was made with anyone else. I loved the music in the Home Mart store scene near the end. I would love to see a sequel which the ending hints to the possibility. It was a fun and entertaining watch as you would usually get with a Denzel movie.

Wild review

It's good to see Reese Witherspoon back on the boat again. This reminded me of a mixture of Into the Wild, Tracks, and 127 Hours. I think this is definitely one of her top roles as I think she gave a range of emotions and scenarios. She truly plays against type and owns it perfectly. Also it helps that she is still quite gorgeous with a rocking body to match. This was a tragic adventure about finding oneself after being lost for so long. It had a lot of humor mixed in through all of emotional strings it pulls. It has some of the most depressing scenes/elements that just really make you wince at the chaos she lived through. One of the funniest scenes had to be the hobo scene. It was quite an interesting adventure filled with interesting supporting characters left and right. I do wish the mother had been cast differently as I'm not really a fan of Laura Dern. Also Cheryl Strayed of course has a small role in the film which is pretty cool. I think she must have been consulted a lot because either they found exact duplicates of her clothes or her actual clothes were used for the movie. Also I think Reese Witherspoon was a perfect choice in the way of looks. This was a very inspirational story that proves people can change if they are determined. Jean-Marc Vallee in my opinion is really proving himself in Hollywood and I'm sure will be highly anticipated for future films. I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend checking it out for sure.

Exodus: Gods and Kings review

So last year Ridley Scott did that horrible movie The Counselor which was highly disappointing. I think he redeemed himself with this epic biblical story. The acting was excellent except for a few of the smaller roles. There were quite a few cast members who had roles in Game of Thrones as well which I think is Awesome. Of course there will be complaints that the actors don't match for the location. Hollywood wants money and recognizable faces are what makes that happen. To be honest I think they all did wonderful despite their races. I think there were little hints of humor in a few scenes albeit a little dark. This was rated PG-13, but some of the thematic elements and visuals made me think of a low R. That being said it definitely should be watched with parents. This was quite visually remarkable. I'm sure Ridley Scott took a few liberties with the story to spice it up for a larger audience. The plagues were relentless and brutal which is how they should be. Exodus isn't a pleasant story, but it's one that is quite important if you are interested in the Word of God. I liked that he dedicated this to his brother Tony Scott.

The Hospital review

So I went to a horror festival and two of the guests Jim O'Rear and Scott Tepperman were there. These guys are well known for being involved in many micro-budget, cheese-fest, horror films a few of which I have heard of or seen. Anyways I decided to check this one out because they said it was one of their most disturbing ones, but they had a great time filming it. Also the fact that this is banned in several countries grabbed my attention because I find it hilarious that people can be so offended. It kind of seems like a pilot for a super cheesy low budget television series for a midnight channel. The Hospital theme song is ridiculous, but for some reason it's kind of catchy and makes me laugh. The acting is laughable and it kind of made me giggle. There were a few points of noticeably poor editing. Some of the girls are nice to look at and others not so much. Rape is a horrible and disgusting thing, but it should be expected as a plot device in horror occasionally. That doesn't make this a comfortable thing to watch though. It is far from easy to watch and should be avoided if you have a weak stomach. It definitely feels very snuff like. There are some pretty sick ideas out there and sometimes they get their ideas out there. Coming from someone who met the actors I can easily separate their behavior from this film. They are genuinely nice guys and nowhere near the disgusting characters portrayed here. Isn't that what acting is anyways. Unfortunately this kind of movie isn't the kind I appreciate or even enjoy, but there are elements here and there I kind of liked. The death scenes are hilariously awful such as a guy who randomly runs down a hallway and gets decapitated by a wire or a guy getting shot by his buddy and calmly says "You shot me bro." I think there are some unexpected little twists here and there. It kind of reminded me of Deliverance, I Spit on Your Grave, and something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre making it quite uncomfortable to sit through. This was such a vile movie with very little to no redeeming factors. I mean it tries to be goofy, disgusting, and not take itself seriously at all. I have no words for that ending. If you are sick and twisted check into The Hospital otherwise this is the complete opposite of worth watching.

Reach Me review

The cast here is quite an unusual mixture of talent. The talent is so expansive and ranges from horrible to decent to great, but that really takes away from the movie. Kelsey Grammer's part was pretty pointless. In fact a lot of characters make such brief appearances that it's hard to tell if it was on purpose or the just couldn't make time for them to have more scenes. It's weird to see Sylvester Stallone in a drama rather than an action film. So there were times where it was captivating, but at other times it was a bit cheesy. I don't think this movie knew what it wanted to bit. It was a collaborative mess of genres from crime, romance, thriller, and dramedy. Too much was going on here and I felt like some things went unresolved and others happened way too quickly. There are a few scenes here and there I kind of liked, but for the most part this was so lame. I was highly disappointed by this movie. It had potential, but it ultimately failed in most aspects.

Neighbours vs. Zombies review

I'm not really into daily soaps, but the concept of a soap with zombies is hilarious. I never watched the series this spins off from, but this mini-series is actually pretty entertaining. There should have been a bit more craziness, but it was still quite entertaining.

Gone Girl review

I have to admit this wasn't a film I was particularly anticipating or anything since I knew nothing about it. I decided to check it out anyways and boy was I surprised by how much I enjoyed this twisted movie. I also didn't realize this was a David Fincher movie whom I have enjoyed most of the films I've seen of his. The acting was phenomenal especially from Rosamund Pike who I normally find underwhelming in most of her roles. I have to say this was quite a depressed and truly mental movie. I was not expecting that at all and that's what made me enjoy this so much more having known nothing. There are a few moments of dark humor that actually made me chuckle. This kind of reminded me of A Good Marriage although a bit more demented in my opinion. There are a few brief sexually graphic conversations and some quick sex scenes that felt a little bit awkward. I didn't expect it to unravel the way it did either. In fact there are quite a few twists and turns from beginning to end. It's actually quite an intelligent film despite it's wickedness. I didn't see that ending at all and definitely has me thinking of all the possible repercussions and outcomes. Anyways don't want to spoil anything. This was quite an entertaining story and was totally worth checking out.

Interstellar review

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are such powerful storytellers I knew this was something I was going to want to see. Even when the plot was under wraps. The cast is amazing and had a few people I had not expected to see. This is visually remarkable with some amazing shots. I loved how Nolan made it so there was actually no sound in space rather than being able to hear whatever is happening. There was a few quite emotional scenes that really pull you into them. I do think that it was quite long and dragged on a bit for no reason occasionally, but that didn't take away the entertainment. I did kind of figure out the twist in the beginning though, but I thought it was executed in an interesting way. Matthew McConaughey is really improving himself as an actor and I was truly entranced by his performance. I think the robots were interesting even if they looked plain. Mackenzie Foy and McConaughey had some great chemistry in my opinion. All the science dialogue might lose the interest of the casual viewer the rest of this will grab your attention. I love all the aspects this film displays on family, life, death, time, and space. The ending implies there could be a possible sequel, but I don't think one is entirely necessary. There were several points that could have been the end of the film, but it kept trudging along. I did really enjoy this one anyways despite the lengthiness. I however probably won't end up sitting down and watching the whole thing from start to finish again due to the previous statement. It is worth a one time watch at least. On an slightly unrelated note it will be interesting to see Jonathan Nolan do the directing for a change with his future film Westworld next year.

Life After Beth review

I like a good zombie movie especially when they try to tweak the story to tell a different kind of tale. The casting choices were an interesting mixture of talent. It's nice to see Aubrey Plaza display a huge range of emotions and characteristics. The acting was good and it was interesting to see all these actors in a zombie film. It wasn't the typical zombie film and it had many of it's own little ideas throughout. It had some good moments and all, but for the most part this was actually kind of underwhelming to be honest. It's a unique story, but I think it wasn't executed to it's full extent.

The Grand Budapest Hotel review

Wes Anderson is quite a unique director who always makes his films visually remarkable. He is known for his constant unusual visual storytelling that always works well for him including this film. The cast here is massive and full of huge stars. It's got quite the story-ception going on. I can't say I enjoyed the constant use of unnecessary narration though. The dialogue is quite good and the actors execute their lines masterfully. The atmosphere of the movie is hilarious which makes it even funnier that the characters are so serious about things. I thought the characters themselves were quite interesting. I actually enjoyed this much more than I thought I would and I'm not even entirely sure why that is. Wes Anderson continues to be an unusual yet exciting director that no one can duplicate. If you enjoy his movies then this should be the next film you watch.
