Tusk review

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 4 December 2014 05:09 (A review of Tusk)

I have been waiting for this one since I heard it was coming out. I love Kevin Smith movies and I enjoy that he is expanding his genres. There are a few actors here I didn't know would be in this which is pretty cool. Johnny Depp's daughter and Kevin Smith's family also have small little cameos if you are familiar with how they look. It kind of starts out cheesy with a scene I wasn't particularly amused with. Then it progresses and gets much better. I swear Justin Long looks like a Walrus already with his giant mustache. It has some humorous elements to it some of which are dark in nature. It definitely has a feel like Human Centipede meets Misery. You know you are dealing with a psychopath when they scream for help with you. It's hard to feel sorry for Wallace with the way he is. Michael Parks shows that he has quite some range in his acting arsenal. This is quite disturbing and can be pretty disgusting, but it wasn't as bad I was thinking it would be. Ah good ole Degrassi reference as usual! I actually enjoyed this even though it's definitely one of the strangest and most effed up movies I have seen. Two things here I found silly in a good way. First was that the movie says it's based on actual events which hopefully nobody takes seriously. Also the fact that Guy Lapointe is credited as himself is pretty silly. It's interesting that this started off as just a part of a podcast. The fact that someone can come up with an idea like this is just crazy and that's what makes it so intriguing. If you enjoy something different, Kevin Smith movies, and have a strong stomach check this out.

The Last Days on Mars review

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 4 December 2014 02:44 (A review of The Last Days on Mars)

I have been meaning to check this out for awhile now, but other movies had been available to me beforehand. Now I'm getting the chance. There is only a handful of a cast, but most of them are quite recognizable. Sadly enough most of this was pretty boring and didn't do anything that I haven't seen already. I wish there was more to it. It was like a dramatic interpretation of a cheesy story involving space "zombies". Given the cast it was underwhelming. The ending keeps you wondering and not in a fun way. There isn't much more to say than that. It was such a disappointing way to start the month off.

Nightcrawler review

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 4 December 2014 12:58 (A review of Nightcrawler)

I just got done watching this and I have to say it was much more interesting than the trailer I saw gives it credit for. I have to say Jake Gyllenhaal is a master of strange characters. The character of Louis Bloom is one disturbed and creepy fellow who doesn't take no for an answer. I loved Riz Ahmed in this as he is pretty much the only likeable character in this whole thing. I do think Bill Paxton's role and talent were slightly underused. The build up through the film is messed up, but in a totally intriguing and well done way. It's hard to talk about this film without spoiling it for others. So go check this out and I promise you will enjoy it.

Side Note: It's interesting to see that the director is married to main actress Rene Russo and that he wrote two other movies I enjoyed (Real Steel) and (The Bourne Legacy.

Annie review

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 1 December 2014 09:26 (A review of Annie)

I have to admit I have no idea why I want to see this other than Quvenzhane Wallis who is an excellent young actress. Will Gluck is a decent enough director though so this might be an okay film. I like the way they started it off giving us a little Easter egg. "Hard Knock Life" and "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow" are the only songs here I particularly cared to hear. Most of the rest of the music felt like bad Kids Bop music except maybe "I'm Gonna Like it Here" and "Big Opportunity". I can't help but think that some of them either were dubbed or they used a lot of auto-tune. This is by far the worst performance I have seen of Cameron Diaz and in my opinion that says a lot. There are a few interesting cameo appearances I didn't see coming. The chemistry between Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis was great. This could have been much better though. I knew there was no way it would be as good as the original. I say give this one a pass.

The Maze Runner review

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 1 December 2014 02:40 (A review of The Maze Runner)

I guess I'm a sucker for these young adult stories getting made into film like Divergent and The Hunger Games. I was also interested because it just looked plain awesome. I don't see why there is a reason to care for the why of the film. I am totally invested of the here and now of it. As long as somewhere down the line of the series they do some sort of explanation. The acting is pretty decent. I wish there was more action here, but when it does happen it's pretty awesome. The first half was kind of slow as usual for these kinds of films, but the last half more than makes up for it. I'm a little skeptical on the ending though, but hey everything has a plot hole. I thought the characters were interesting and unique. It was definitely worth the watch.

Additional Note: I do agree with Joshua though with the Lord of the Flies and Hunger Games likeness. I even think the youngest Chuck reminds me of the kid from Goonies. Who cares if the movie has been similarly done before. Everyone has a different way of telling the same kind of story and I think this one was interesting enough. It could have been better which I'm sure the second one will be much improved.

St. Vincent review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 27 November 2014 06:03 (A review of St. Vincent)

I decided to see this at the theater I worked at since I had already seen the ones I was planning on seeing. I did think the trailer looked funny, but otherwise it hadn't caught my attention with it's pretty much cliche premise. Naomi Watts does a great Russian accent. If this was the first movie I ever saw with her I would assume that it's her natural voice. There are some really cute moments throughout this. I loved the chemistry between Bill Murray and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher. I think this was an average movie, but it's definitely a top performance for Bill. It is cliche as expected, but it does have a deeper more emotional message than other films of this caliber. I have to admit that I teared up a bit at the end. This is definitely one of those kind of movies that teaches you to never judge a book by its cover.

Foxcatcher review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 27 November 2014 05:50 (A review of Foxcatcher)

I saw the trailer for this awhile back. I was so intrigued I read a little about the story that this is based on. I just got out of the theater I work at after seeing it and was greatly impressed. Not only is the acting superb, but I think this is a game changer for Steve Carell and Channing Tatum. John du Pont made me feel uneasy throughout the entire film as he is just an extremely awkward and strange person. Steve Carell did amazing and he is far from type here although there are a few scenes were his roots in comedy make a slight shimmer. This has to be Channing Tatum's best performance of all time. Mark Ruffalo as usual shined in all of his scenes as well and really made you like David Schultz. I knew what was coming in the end, but I was still caught off guard by what actually happened. Bennett Miller hasn't directed many films, but when he does he makes sure that they are quite memorable. I see Oscar nominees for the whole shebang here. It's definitely worth checking out.

Rosewater review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 25 November 2014 02:38 (A review of Rosewater)

This really intrigued me since it was written and directed by comedic newscaster Jon Stewart. I think he did an excellent job with this story. The acting is superb. There is a bit of dark humor that you can tell was part of what made this a part of Jon Stewart. This is a bit of a slow burner so don't expect a lot of action or anything like that. I have seen a few movies like this and always they are quite interesting. I hope this opens some eyes out there.

Extraterrestrial review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 23 November 2014 10:44 (A review of Extraterrestrial)

I liked the trailer, but I don't actually expect much from this film to be honest. It does have a few horror regulars like Jesse Moss and Emily Perkins. This was written and directed by the same people who did the Grave Encounters movies that I loved. It even stars the main actor Sean Rogerson. The opening credits made me feel like I was watching an episode of X-Files which isn't a bad thing. I like the mixture of found footage thrown in here and there in this instead of just being a typical found footage film. The acting starts off a bit iffy, but it becomes much better as the movie continues especially from Gil Bellows. The aliens however weren't all that special to look at unfortunately. There were a few interesting scenes here and there. The ending was quite well done and not what I was expecting at all. I think this is one of those films that is going to be highly underrated. I do wonder what happened with a few characters other than that I really have nothing against this. So who exactly is the bigger evil here the government or aliens? I thought this was quite enjoyable for my personal preference anyways.

The Boxtrolls (2014) review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 23 November 2014 07:02 (A review of The Boxtrolls (2014))

I'm not really a big clay-mation fan for the most part, but the cast for this caught my eye. So I decided to go ahead and check it out. For a family movie this can be quite disturbing. There is a kid that eats bugs, a murdering cross dresser who has a disgusting allergy towards cheese , and townspeople who are basically cheese addicts. The boxtrolls are so adorable and fun to watch. It's along the lines of gross child movies like Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas, but slightly more disturbing and uncomfortable. I think parents shouldn't let their kids watch this by themselves. That being said I think this had a good message behind it. It's a cute film with interesting characters. It's definitely a different kind of kids movie.
